RnB singer/songwriter Ravyn Lenae has been busy working on her next album with producer Steve Lacy, and on Friday, listeners got the first official taste of what to expect from the highly anticipated project.
When Lenae’s vocals first hit around the 30-second mark of “Sticky,” her piercing scats are instantly recognizable. Her vocals balance delicateness with clarity, simultaneously soothing in a way that hooks you into the song. She navigates the ins and outs of a complicated relationship with tongue-in-cheek songwriting and a comforting soulful ambiance.
The Internet’s Steve Lacy, who released his breakout Demo EP earlier this year, accompanies Lenae with his signature funky basslines and fuzzy guitar riffs. Combined with Lenae’s sharpness, the two musical forces equalize each other. The result is a song that sounds timeless; it could have been released 20 years ago or 20 years from now and would still be the kind of song anybody could vibe to. With “Sticky” as a signal of more to come, the excitement for Lenae’s forthcoming project only grows. Stay tuned.
