Lyrical Lemonade Presents: The Johari Noelle Q&A

Johari Noelle is one of the newer Chicago creatives that I have got in tune with in 2019, and when I heard that she was gearing up to release her new project Things You Can’t Say Out Loud, I figured why not bring her by the Lyrical Lemonade office for a brand interview? You can expect her to speak about plenty of interesting subjects such as the previously mentioned project, all of the talent that has come out of her high school HF, her strong relationship with her family, how Chicago has influenced her and her headlining show that will be taking place this week in Chicago at The Promontory. Learn a thing or two about Johari by reading this brand new interview below, and you can purchase tickets to see Johari live June 5th here.     Elliot: Before we dive into the questions, give our readers who may not be familiar with you a brief introduction of yourself? Johari: My name is Johari Noelle I am a singer, song writer and actress from Chicago. I recently released two singles one of them is called “Show Me” and the other one is called “Too Much and I just released a new EP called …

Papaya! – [Malci]

The criminally overlooked Chicago emcee and producer Malci is here with his newest project Papaya!, released today. This arrives nearly two years after his last project DO YOU KNOW YOURSELF, my personal introduction to Malci and one of my favorite overall projects to come out of 2017. Now he’s back in 2019 with Papaya!, which is an exciting release, as it heads in a completely different creative direction than his previous project. Production-wise, this project features primarily synth-based, glitchy and atmospheric beats along with field recordings. It’s seventeen tracks, but doesn’t overstay its welcome in the slightest, clocking in around thirty-four minutes, following this many-short-songs album format that some of my other recent favorite albums have followed by artists like Earl Sweatshirt, Slauson Malone, and Lucki.  Papaya! ends up making for an extremely cohesive and engaging listen that only leaves the listener wanting more from Malci. There are some really interesting genre-bending soundscapes on here along with melodic and enjoyable production throughout. “The 40 Oz Endorsement” perfectly encapsulates the record, as it features otherworldly production underlying Malci talking about thrifting a nice outfit, beating three Final Fantasy games, and shouting about drinking 40s “because they work”. The track “Byzantine Way” …

Type – [Tay Rhodes]

We love sharing hot new music here on our website from every walk of life, but it means a little more whenever we get the chance to share some talent from the midwest, which is what we have here as Detroit artist Tay Rhodes is making his LL debut this afternoon with his new record titled “Type”. The track kicks off with a slow paced, somewhat menacing instrumental that built up slowly but surely for about thirty seconds before the bass came knocking through, leading into Tay Rhodes more than impressive vocal performance, blessing us with an undeniably catchy hook and some even better bars in his verse. This may be the first time that Tay Rhodes has graced our website but I can assure you that it will not be the last, he has a special sound and I can see him rising into one of Detroits finest in no time. Stream this brand new offering via Spotify below and if you like what you hear be sure to keep up with Tay Rhodes by giving him a follow on Twitter here!

Isolation – [Myquale]

It’s been a little minute since we have last heard from Myquale, but just a few hours ago he blessed us with a brand new offering titled “Isolation”. I don’t really know how to say this without sounding like I’m gassing him up, but this track is truly the best thing I have heard this week. I have had it BLASTING at maximum volume at the Lyrical Lemonade offices for at-least thirty minutes this morning, and I think if you give it a chance you will be doing the same thing. Stream this brand new record via Soundcloud below and if you like what you hear then be sure to share it with a friend! Fast Life – [Lucki]

A couple days back we got blessed with a brand new gem titled “Fast Life” by Chicago’s own Lucki featuring Cardiac. The instrumental built up slowly but surely for the first thirty seconds or so of this one, building up the suspense until Lucki jumped on the beat and kicked a stellar verse, followed up by a solid complimentary finish from Cardiac. Go ahead and stream this brand new joint via Soundcloud below and if you like it be sure to give it a repost!

Faking – [Nina Tech]

Chicago’s own Nina Tech has appeared on our platform a number of times in the past, and this afternoon she is back with a brand new offering titled “Faking”. You could tell that she was about to go crazy just by the way the menacing instrumental built up slowly but surely for the first thirty seconds, before ultimately the hard kncoking beat hit followed up by Nina’s signature flow as she spit a verse chop filled with catchy bars. Take a few minutes of your day to listen to this brand new joint below and if you like it be sure to share this record with a friend! Produced by H!tkidd

Thirty8 – [Robnhood Tra]

With the Super Bowl taking over Atlanta, it only felt right to give some shine to Robnhood Tra, one of the city’s most promising, young emcees. One who both reflects the Atlanta sound, and is engaged in giving back to his community (living up to the Robnhood name). Building off the sucess his 2018 EP “Exit 66,” Tra returns with a potent, crisp effort in “Thirty8.” Thanks to his youthful energy and a bevy of cadences–all delivered with his melodic vocals– Robnhood really jumps at you. Despite the energetic, melodic energy, the track still has a sinister feel thanks to the booming beat, and Tra’s cold, calculated bars. The energy of the track is perfectly reflected in the visuals, in particular, how he and his crew get up to no good, in a beautiful, candy-painted whip. No word on larger plans for the effort, but considering it’s strength, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t part of a larger project.

While Chicago has been known as a reputable city in hip-hop for numerous years now, this revered position has not arrived without the constant innovation and hard work of the artists that so faithfully represent the prowess of their home city. It is these artists that we have to credit for this respected reputation, and we here at Lyrical Lemonade try to honor this in every way possible by constantly bringing new Chicago acts into our headlines here on our website. That said, 2018 has been yet another fantastic year for Chicago music, so we went ahead and compiled a list of our “Top 50 Chicago Projects” of the year. This now marks the third year that we have been putting out this list, and we believe that it’s safe to say this year’s list might just be the most solid one from top to bottom that we’ve seen yet. Thank you to our terrific writing staff for all of the hard work they have put in this year, I will be linking their socials below so be sure to contact them about getting featured on the website in the future. Seamus Fay • Mike Del Ro • Sam Morrison • …

Ten Toes/Imma Ball – [Cartier Shamar]

An artist named Cartier Shamar is making his first appearance on our website this afternoon with his brand new tune titled “Ten Toes/Imma Ball”. Once the instrumental started I wasn’t sure what direction he was about to take this one, but once the snare and bass kicked it thirty seconds later and he jumped on the beat with his sing/rap combo I was more than impressed. Listen to this brand new song below and if you like it be sure to keep up with Cartier by giving him a follow on Twitter here!

Ascension – [Chi Adkins] Ft. [Ro Marsalis]

Chi Adkins has been featured on our website in the past as a feature artist, but today he is back with his Lyrical Lemonade debut with his own record titled “Ascension” featuring Ro Marsalis. It didn’t take more than thirty seconds into this track before I was sold, they created a stellar melody from the very beginning that gave this one that addictive trait, but the verses on top of it made the song that much better. Both of these artist have outstanding vocal abilities and they each shined on this one, complimenting each other flawlessly as they created a great all around offering. Stream this brand new tune below and if you like it be sure to give Chi Adkins a follow on Soundcloud here.
