TOP 50 CHICAGO PROJECTS OF 2018

While Chicago has been known as a reputable city in hip-hop for numerous years now, this revered position has not arrived without the constant innovation and hard work of the artists that so faithfully represent the prowess of their home city. It is these artists that we have to credit for this respected reputation, and we here at Lyrical Lemonade try to honor this in every way possible by constantly bringing new Chicago acts into our headlines here on our website. That said, 2018 has been yet another fantastic year for Chicago music, so we went ahead and compiled a list of our “Top 50 Chicago Projects” of the year. This now marks the third year that we have been putting out this list, and we believe that it’s safe to say this year’s list might just be the most solid one from top to bottom that we’ve seen yet. Thank you to our terrific writing staff for all of the hard work they have put in this year, I will be linking their socials below so be sure to contact them about getting featured on the website in the future. Deep Water – [Calez]

Calez is certainly no stranger to our lemon-filled platform and his latest track in Deep Water is all the evidence you need as to why he is a staff favorite. Produced by Drake Connor, the infectious piano was right-at-home for the Chicago emcee who graced us with his smooth lyrics & wordplay on having a voice, inspiring others and much more that looks to promote positivity, prosperity and love; and that’s really only the start. I’ve been a fan of Calez ever since his BABY album from last year and with each release comes a reminder as to why he is one of my go-to artists when I’m looking for a relaxed song such as this one. With that being said, get into his latest in Deep Water below and keep posted for more from him in the near future.

Poppa – [Calez]

You may have seen Calez on our Top 50 Chicago projects list back in 2016 with his Baby record, and late last night, he came through with his first tape of the present year titled Poppa. Coming in at 5 tracks, the stellar production came from the likes of Drake Connor, Thelonius Martin, Calev, Cartin Lang & Calez himself with the lone features coming from Mick Jenkins and Alex Wiley on Cool. I’ve been keeping tabs on the Chicago talent since that Baby album and immediately after pressing play on this one, the overall growth in the sound & style were both at the forefront right away. Let’s hope that Calez has more plans for releases like this one as the year carries on, but until then let loose the Poppa EP below!

Light It Up – [Calez] Ft. [UG Vavy] & [Loren]

Calez is returning to our pages tonight with his amazing new record titled “Light It Up” featuring Chicago’s own UG Vavy and Loren. This one instantly caught my attention thanks to the hard knocking production handled by @arciteklordz, before both Calez & UG Vavy dropped on the beat with some solid contributions to make this one that much better. Loren knew he had to match the great amount of effort that they brought to the table, and it doesn’t take much more than one listen to his stellar feature to know that he brought it all to the table. As if this wasn’t enough, Calez came back with arguably my favorite verse he has ever spit, throwing in plenty of memorable & witty rhymes in the process. This was an all around solid offering & I highly suggest you press play below!

Heartbeat – [Calez]

One day after Father’s Day, Chicago rapper, Calez, delivers a heartfelt video titled Heartbeat.  The video is shot in the first person view as if we’re experiencing what it’s like to be the child.  Calez reminds us to be happy and keep our loved ones even closer.  The warm instrumental along with the gentle singing here and there captures the emotion of what being a father really means.  Check out the video below.  Listen to the rest of the mixtape, BABY, here.

Problematic – [Calez]

Chicago native Calez has rung in Martin Luther King Day with a unique visual for his track “Problematic” from his highly-acclaimed album “Baby” that dropped last October. The William S Goldstein-directed cut see’s Calez laying down his politically charged lyrics in front of a photo-collage backdrop that flips through pictures of his family and much more. Coming off of his album release last year, it’s safe to assume that Calez is bound to have something special in store for his fans this year as well. Make sure to peep the new video and leave us your thoughts in the comments below. Courtesy of: Ceito Republic

LL Presents: The Jose Santos Q&A

I first met Jose at our second Lyrical Lemonade Cypher, and since then I’ve been following & supporting his music career. He is easily one of the most unique artists I know, for some reason, his music reminds me of fellow Chicago native Towkio. Take a few minutes below to learn a thing or two about him, then be sure to check out his great music catalog here!     EM: First things first, give our readers that may not be familiar with you a brief introduction of yourself JS: Cool, so I go by the name Jo$e Santos (a.k.a. Lil Chair a.k.a. Lil Don Francisco) & Im a 20 year old rapper/artist/part-time fuck boi. Im originally from the city of Chicago but I move around a pretty decent amount though. As of right now I stay out in the burbs. — EM: When did you start creating music? JS: I started creating music last year, 2015. Besides the fact that I loved HipHop/Rap music and just music in general actually, I was hearing peoples tracks on sound cloud and shit and I would see how much love they were getting for making trash ass music and so basically I was like “Damn yo. It cant be that hard …

Baby – [Calez]

With his first born child on the way, Chicago rapper Calez drops an astonishing new tape called Baby. Calez clearly has a lot to share with us, as he unveils the story of his eventful life in the form of music. Growing up in the tough streets of the city, his past experiences have helped him evolve into the soulful emcee he is today as he marks the beginning of a brand new journey with the release of this project. With features from Alex Wiley, Mick, Donnie Trumpet, Kembe X, UG Vavy, Femdot, and more, this tape has encompasses all the components of a classic. Even his previous work on featured tracks with Chance the rapper, Wiley and Mick were all clear indications that Calez was special in terms of style, and lyricism. Baby is not only a compilation of great songs, but it is music with a purpose and message behind all of it. It also represents the start of a new journey that Calez is about to embark on. Lend your ears, and be sure to give us your thoughts. Navigator Truck/Spaceship II – [Alex Wiley] ft. [Chance The Rapper] & [Calez]

Via All Def Digital  As Alex Wiley continues rock his nationwide tour with the likes of Kembe X and Hippie Sabotage, the Chicago native has found time to collaborate with a fellow Chicago director by the name of Sebastian A. Guerra, to bring us the highly anticipated visuals for arguably two of Wiley’s fan favorites “Navigator Truck” & “Spaceship II“. To place his own spin for this shoot, Sebastian opted not to feature Wiley in his own video. Instead, he thoroughly choreographs and captures an action figure depicting Alex Wiley, first riding around in his four door truck picking up an entourage of barbie dolls, roaming California and living the dream. He then transitions into “Spaceship II“, where again we find action figure Wiley accompanied by his barbie girl, as the two explore space from the comfort of their spaceship. The videos themselves are unorthodox and something we don’t typically see from directors nowadays, but that’s what separates these visuals from most … originality. Checkout the incredibly innovative visuals for Alex Wiley’s smash hits featuring both Chance The Rapper & Calez below and let us know what you think!
