SHOTS! – [JELEEL!] ft. [Denzel Curry]

I try my best to diversify the things I write about by including different artists as well as a mixture of songs, videos, and projects as often as I can. There are obviously a few artists that I write about a bit more regularly, but that’s just because it’s more fun for me to write about people I truly listen to regularly than it is for me to try and come up with tons of things to say about an emcee that I just don’t know too much about. I say all of this because earlier this week, in fact just a few days ago, I wrote about JELEEL!’s song “SHOTS!” with Denzel Curry, a track that was pulsating with energy, vigor, and vitality, as we’ve come to expect from the Rhode Island and Florida phenoms. Not even a week could go by, though, without them teaming up with director Zach Madden to shoot a music video for the banger, so even though I just posted the song, I simply couldn’t resist talking about the video because it was just so well-executed. In the miniature movie, we’re taken to this industrial warehouse where there is this complicated contraption resting in …

Care – [midwxst]

I know what some people might be thinking when it comes to another article about midwxst written by me, but if you’re as excited about the Indiana phenom as I am, you should be just as pumped as I was when I found out he released some new music right at the end of last week. While I know I’m a few days late, I was listening to his most recent record “Care” all weekend long, but when I finally got around to watching the Zach Madden-directed music video, it turned into a release that I simply couldn’t resist writing about. Ava Doorley produced this hit, incorporating some lively electronic sounds with intense drums and consistent percussion that is not necessarily new to the sonic world of midwxst, but he proves that he crushes it on this style of instrumental every time he hops in the booth with this song being no exception. In this one, I love the way he elevates his energy as the beat grows more vibrant but slows down during other portions, something that he has done before in other tracks previously, but it’s never anything less than magnificent. The music video is really where my …

The Talents To Come Out Of Homewood Flossmoor High School

Over the past five years of covering the Chicago music scene, interviewing artists, and making relationships with these creatives, I have noticed something that I believe is super intriguing: there have been so many talented individuals who went to Homewood Flossmoor High School at (or around) the same time. It’s not too often that you see this many extraordinary creatives come out of the same place at once — at least I have never heard of something like this before — but even more so, I think it’s a rarity for to have this type of talent come out of the same school especially in the same field. I believe that a big part of this should be credited to the opportunities that Homewood Flossmoor provides to their students, in all avenues, but especially in the music field. The school has engaged students in music industry classes, Jazz orchestra courses, holding rap contests (and giving out prizes to the winners), shooting music videos for their senior students at times, giving them their own radio show to practice freestyling + DJ’ing, and they even take their bands on extraordinary trips to places like Japan. It’s crazy to think about what can …
