MuddyMya: If It’s Meant To Happen, It Will

Cover Photo By @dumoarles MuddyMya started releasing music a little over a year ago to date without much expectation. In her words, “I just make songs and post them.” Today, the Atlanta native has become a buzzing name in the underground, recently putting out some of her best work to date in the form of “Cashin Out” — a single produced by CashCache and MexikoDro, headed by lyrics including my personal favorite: “Life I never planned it out, but look how things are panning out.” Speaking to Mya, she places large emphasis on the fact that her success thus far has arrived without much expectation – she works at her craft, makes the best music she can make, and lets the universe do the rest. And the universe has certainly been responding. With numerous cultural cosigns to her name, a fast-growing fanbase, and a singular, masked aesthetic, Mya is doing things on her own terms and garnering authentic, well-deserved acclaim for it. No over-stretching herself or asking favors – just genuine support on true-to-self music and a world-building creative vision. 6 months ago, she worked for Target at a job she hated. Today, Mya is fully focused on music, with the …

CASHIN OUT – [MuddyMya] prod. [CashCache] [Mexikodro]

MuddyMya has been creating a wave of her own in the undercurrents of Atlanta’s ‘SoundCloud’ scene if you will and has been building her impeccable brand and aesthetic through a series of stunning visuals and has impressed musically with her gentle, sing-songy flows and top-notch beat selection. She came together with the plugg-father-and-son of Mexikodro and CashCache for a sanguine and upbeat collaboration that was crafted perfectly for Mya to float over, flexing her endless bag of cadences and effortless ability to inflect her vocals with and without the assistance of autotune. I really hope Mya continues to dabble with the plugg-sound and would love to hear at least an EP of her skating over happy plugg beats and even collaborating with more of the artists in Atlanta who are also helping reignite that wave.

Dis Should Hold You Over 2 – [Tony Shhnow] [CashCache]

I think at this point it is safe to say that plugg-music has been revived in a sense as all around America and more and more the world we are starting to see new plugg scenes emerge from scratch as well as seeing more traditional and established artists begin to gravitate to the sound that originally saw popularity in on SoundCloud in 2016 and our nostalgia-heavy music culture has already pushed this style into being paid homage and sonically reformed with new layers and intricacies being added everyday. Mexikodro and StupidXool are the undisputed champions and creators of plugg music but it has been two other names that have dominated plugg’s comeback over the past year and they are Atlanta natives Tony Shhnow and Cashcache! who have respectively been internet rap staples for almost three years now and are beginning to receive the appreciation and support that they have both deserved for some time now. This is their second project together as their acclaimed initial collaboration project Dis Should Hold You Over was met with tremendous support from a wide host of rap’s most respected pundits as well as being praised by all corners of the SoundCloud community, both for …

Spend – [Serane] x [CashCache!]

French rapper Serane has had a particularly viral week on twitter, stemming simultaneously from both a video that went viral in America of one of his recent snippets where he was quickly labeled as the “French Goonew” in what was many people outside of the current underground scene in America’s initial exposure to him where he was met with a lot of love and some hostility, as many were upset at the appropriation of the DMV flow reaching as far as Europe while equally many were flattered that foreigners are showing such immense love to a criminally underrated style. And also, if we had to keep up with every rapper who bites off of Goonew we honestly wouldn’t have many left. Serane also had a polarizing week in the French music blog world, at least from what I could gather from the “translate tweet” button, but it is certainly clear that he is the unquestionable king of French SoundCloud which is a fascinating and quickly growing scene that is bringing plugg-music to Europe. Serane has been working extensively now with Atlanta producer CashCache who has been the sonic backbone in the plugg music renaissance that is building on last decade’s …

I Love Cashcache 2 – [CashCache!]

Atlanta’s Cashcache! has been one of the foremost breakout producers in the entire underground rap world that is clearly derived from the plugg-sounds of Mexikodro and StupidXool that first captivated SoundCloud in 2015-16 but never quite had the true mainstream moment most fans thought it deserved, despite numerous big songs that helped forge their almost god-like cult-followings in the producer community and greater rap world. Nonetheless a new crop of artists are popping up on SoundCloud almost daily looking to revive or build off of this classic internet sound and Cashcache has led the charge as far as working to further expand the sonic possibilities of the sub-genre, making at times stripped back and minimal plugg beats that are almost borderline jazz rap or futuristic and warped ideations that push plugg music further onto the razor sharp tip of hip-hop’s cutting edge. Cashcache’s new mixtape I Love CashCache 2 builds on the sonic achievements that he has found this year most notably with 10kDunkin, Tony Shhnow, and BoofPaxkMooky but also introduces and co-signs a host of new artists as well making noise in the current underground realm. “Deacon Tony” has been one of my favorite Cash and Tony Shhnow collaborations since I …

Garden – [BoofPaxkMooky]

Atlanta producer CashCache has long been a favorite of many in the underground for his glittery and sanguine instrumentals that are distinctly plugg influenced, citing Mexikodro as his main production inspiration, and has worked tirelessly to evolve his sound even further and make his jazz/plugg/pop hybrid even more distinguishable than it already was in the first place. When you hear ‘CashCache type beat’ now, one will immediately be able to place likely both the sound and mood of the track even before pressing play and that is perhaps the most awe inspiring part of his art as he has very intentionally created a sound that is unmistakably his. Recently he and BoofPaxkMooky, an artist who has been a main collaborator of Cash’s for some time now, connected for a new mixtape entitled Garden. Both Cash and Mooky shine and are very much in their bags and Mooky shows off his distinctive melodic but slightly off-beat and constantly inflecting flow that will be well-received by fans of artists like Duwap Kaine or ATL Smook. “Downy” is one of my favorite tracks off of the project and includes the first feature of the project coming from 1600j. “Be Yourself” will be a familiar beat …

Racks In – [MexikoDro]

Whether you know it or not, if you are a fan of trap music you are a fan of MexikoDro and if you don’t believe me then ask any producer you know. His fingerprints are literally laced all over the genre and was one of the producers to truly create and put the ‘plugg’ sound on the map that went on to wildly impact both the larger SoundCloud and ‘street’ rap scenes and unquestionably stamped him alongside Zaytoven as the true trap architect. However Dro has been through many ups and downs over the past few years and has spent a lot of time in jail and unfortunately that has hindered him from receiving the spotlight and flowers he deserves, but today Dro is a free man and is more focused than ever and has pivoted to focusing more heavily on his solo artistry which is so distinctly Atlanta, and in many ways is exactly what you would expect him to rap like, aside from that his voice might be gruffer than anticipated. On his latest track “Racks In” the flow he hits reminds me almost of Bankroll Fresh and the raspiness of his flow only cements that similarity. The …

Tony Shhnow and CashCache! tell us how they linked up, their latest joint-project, how CashCache got his tag, and much more in an exclusive new Q&A

2020 has been a year of mass chaos and upheaval that has lead to a great many growing pains within our different communities as dissension increases more and more and on a much more microcosmic level, this has been reflected in many different music trends, specifically within rap, that have begun to take shape over the last twelve months that are certainly challenging sonic status-quos while also inspiring and grabbing the attention of new listeners every day who are tired of hearing the exact same type of boring song structure and production tropes continually. Atlanta in particular has been a hotbed for this rise of creativity and innovation within the ‘trap’ and ‘SoundCloud’ spaces that have given both artists and producers a blank canvas to essentially riff on the sounds and flows pulled off by their peers. It is innately collaborative and frankly beautiful to watch and while people may immediately point to artists like 645AR, whose squeaky-voiced flow has already enchanted millions this year, or even Kenny Mason who is beginning to work metal and shoegaze production tendencies into his music in a completely new way, unlike the tired and drab ‘rap-rock’ of previous years. However, neither of these …
