How You Want It – [Teyana Taylor]

There’s no one in the game quite like Teyana Taylor. The multi-faceted star has proven her prowess as a singer, dancer, actor, director, and self-made entrepreneur. And while glimpses of her uncontainable talent have surfaced over her decade-long career, things really began to culminate with the release of KTSE last summer. Taylor’s maintained pace as an unstoppable, unapologetically genuine force of nature since then, and today, she keeps the energy building with her new single “How You Want It”. Taylor throve off of vintage aesthetics on KTSE, sounding right at home with her raspy tones and harmonies over Kanye’s signature chopped-up soul beats. “How You Want It” brings a similar flavor, with Hitmaka producing an early 00’s RnB-inspired beat that’s driven by a sultry guitar riff and a steady bounce. It’s more upbeat than the majority of Taylor’s discography so far, and it’s a refreshing change of pace that still feels attune to her style. Few artists could pull off being sensual as well as she does, and she makes sure to remind us of this in her songwriting. Taylor also brings in a surprising guest, recruiting Diddy’s son King Combs. While it isn’t a feature that most might have …

All Day – [Maka] ft. [Connis]

Some things in life just go together — it’s an innate thing. For example, peanut butter and jelly, fish and chips, even knives and forks; Massachusetts artist Maka and the warm weather is a perfect example of one of these combinations. Whenever the sun comes out, the temperatures rise, and the days start to get a little longer, Maka unloads the slew of music that he’s been building up throughout the colder months, and the result is an unbelievable supply of music for listeners to feast on all throughout the spring and summer. Today, Maka is back to continue on this hot streak with one of my favorite songs of his to date, “All Day” featuring Connis. Produced by Rolexdaytona, “All Day” is a perfect song for the summer due, in part, to the galvanizing swirl of infectious melodies that act its foundation. Washing over these melodies is a splash of eccentric drumlines, and the final, most essential touch here is the addition of the vocals, demonstrating an intensely entertaining performance from both Maka and Connis. Each of the two artists go back and forth in excitement, and throughout the entire duration of the song, fans receive a notably animated example of …

Out My Way – [Maka] ft. [Donald Grunge]

Consistent as he may be all year round, it goes without saying that Massachusetts native Maka comes into full form during the spring and summertime. Something about his sound makes perfect sense during the warmer months, and today, Maka shows this off with his annual spring and summer campaign, dropping off a new single entitled “Out My Way” alongside fellow MA artist Donald Grunge. Produced by Brockton, MA native Isaiah Valmont, this collaboration between three of the state’s most promising talents is certainly an exciting one on paper, and the song is sure to deliver. Maka and Grunge find a creatively ambitious balance of sparkling, loosely-flowing deliveries, and the real wind under their sails arrives in the concoction of melody both in the production and in their vocals. In such a manner, “Out My Way” feels like everyone is on the same page and roaring with energy, making this one a must-listen. Our 50 Favorite Wiz Khalifa Songs

In the music world, influence manifests itself in many different ways. Whether it be sonically — changing the sounds that artists use and often creating some sort of new trend and/or subgenre in the process — or aesthetically — changing the “cool” styles in music and the lifestyles that artists speak about in their songs — influence can arrive packaged as a quick viral moment or a lasting flame, both of which hold value in their own rights.  Pittsburgh’s own, the Taylor Gang representative himself, Wiz Khalifa, is one of the rare talents who comes around and entirely shifts the culture in both of the aforementioned ways. Especially when he first came out, Wiz’s lanky, tattooed build and effortlessly cool stoner lifestyle made him a genuinely alluring artist, and while his personal style (snapbacks, the dyed patch of hair, etc.) was worthy of mention, the music was there to back it all up. Simply put, Wiz’s style, both on the mic and off, quickly set a standard for creatives and other artists to congregate toward, marking him as one of music’s most underrated culture-shifters of the last decade or so. Even further, beyond the influence that Wiz has had on a …

Live In Boston – [Maka]

From tropical, warm-weathered anthems all the way to simplistic, back-breaking bangers like “Live In Boston,” Massachusetts native Maka has been one of my favorite artists to watch over the past few years. He’s always switching up his style and trying out new things, making for an endlessly entertaining output that you can never predict, but you can always count on to impress. Today, Maka is back to bless fans with the much-needed visual companion for “Live In Boston.” Featuring runway imagery to match the song’s various fashion references as well as numerous scenes of Maka enjoying himself and dancing to such an effortlessly anthemic song, this music video is the perfect example of Maka’s charismatic personality. The laidback charm of “Live In Boston” is seamlessly translated onto the screen, and here to attest are some iconic quotes that Maka included such as my two personal favorites: “This shit bounce.” – The Streets “I f*ck with it” – Raf Simons “Live In Boston” is the perfect, to-the-point banger that we can all throw on repeat at our summer functions this year, so be sure to get hip by checking out the new video below! Don Ricardo Drive (Paranoia) – [Patrick Michel]

Hailing from Brockton, Massachusetts, Patrick Michel is at the head of the charge right now in terms of Massachusetts artists who are quickly bringing attention toward their home state. Michel’s skills reside most impactfully in his soul-stricken vocals and commanding presence when on the mic, and today, he’s here to show this off with a hard-nosed new offering by the name of “Don Ricardo Drive (Paranoia)”. Produced by fellow MA talent, Maka, this track takes on a powerful nature from the very first seconds, as the simplistic piano melodies clash against the trap-induced drums with ease. When matched with Patrick Michel’s vivid lyrics and energetic vocals, “Don Ricardo Drive” becomes a banger at heart, and the result is a piece of undeniable proof why Michel is set to have a blockbuster year in 2019. CowboyTalk – [Donald Grunge]

While the worlds of hip-hop and country music may seem like polar opposites on the surface, it can be oddly magical when an artist attempts to find a fusion between the two. Here to take on the challenge is a Boston-based act by the name of Donald Grunge with his latest project, CowboyTalk. 7 tracks long, this tape is by far one of the most creative we’ve heard in recent memory, as Grunge’s otherworldly vocals take on a life of their own amidst such energetic production. Surely, CowboyTalk is creatively ambitious, but it’s also extremely well-executed, shedding a light on one of Boston’s finest rising talents at the moment. The tape’s two singles — “Guitar Grunge” and “Snake In My Boot” — set up a perfect alley-oop for the main entree, and just as we anticipated, Grunge released a slam dunk. Henny Sippa – [FAbzabove] ft. [Donald Grunge] [Splash Got’Em]

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s some serious energy coming out of Boston right now. Here to lead the charge for their hometown are three artists by the names of FAbzabove, Donald Grunge, and Splash Got’Em with their brand new visuals for the anthemic single, “Henny Sippa”. As the title entails, this track is as reckless and unapologetically itself as can be. It’s addictive in its over-the-top personality while energetic in sound, and the result is an offering that is ready to light up any venue it touches, one “Henny sippa, Glock grippa, F*ck N****” chant at a time. The visuals complement this energy to a T, and needless to say, they speak for themselves, so I’ll let you watch for yourself at the link below. Oh, and by the way, this should remind you that Boston’s got next. Produced by Maka Shot & Directed by Xandros Mixed by Triple Beam Brad
