Get Refreshed: Inside Curiosity Shop’s “Hidden Meadow”

“Get Refreshed” is a weekly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here.  Cover by 5outho (For Curiosity Shop) Fresh Reflection: Curiosity Shop’s “Hidden Meadow” Event Curiosity Shop, one of the most premier progressive electronic music collectives on the rise today, celebrated its first anniversary this weekend by hosting its Hidden Meadow event on Twitch. The event – organized by Curiosity Shop’s founder and leading artist Cole Longanecker alongside other members of the collective – showcased a number of strung-together mixes of all things dance and electronica, past and present alike, both through the sounds of their mixes and the visuals that were artfully paired with them. All of these performances followed Curiosity Shop’s primitive 3D-graphic centered ethos through aesthetics, sounds, and styles all the same — altogether creating an unforgettable experience not just for its remarkable content and sheer quality of the performances themselves, but also for their equally masterful visual cues that were either made by the artists in their own right, or done by any number of the fantastic designers that lent their work to the show. The simple fact that the collective was able to showcase such telling artistic …

A Conversation with Mulherin

From the moment I began writing for Lyrical Lemonade, I fell in love with unearthing the true gems of the music industry; Artists who definitively transcend the fad obsessed world that we live in and truly present themselves as individuals who can have a long lasting career filled with success and influence. At first, these types of artists weren’t easy to find, but after some time, I came across two guys who truly made me rethink what I considered great music to be. If you haven’t heard of Mulherin, then allow this article to serve as a PSA for anyone who is in dire need of discovering the next big thing. I use lofty phrases and words like that lightly, but when it comes to this LA-Based duo, I firmly believe that they are generational talents that need to be seen and heard in every way. I really can’t stress how great their art is and I’m so glad that I got the chance to catch up with twin brothers, Parker and Marshall Mulherin to talk about their artists project and everything that they’ve got in store for 2021. Like I said above; If you’re looking for your newest obsession, …

Lil Yachty Interview: Five Years In & Still Persevering

“When I was like 18, I used to really care about what everybody thought about my music and it used to get to me. I just started to realize that when you do good, people will criticize you, and when you do bad, they still criticize you.” -Lil Yachty Photo Cred: Gunner Stahl If there’s one thing that the roller coaster of a year that was 2020 has showed us, is that time is flying by. It seems like just a couple of years ago we were introduced to Apple Music and transitioning to an all-digital era of music. Some of the favorite songs, albums and mixtapes that existed over the last half of a decade are aging faster than we can count to 10, and  we are even nearing the anniversary of some projects turning 10 this year. It sounds crazy to even say this out loud, but 2021 will be the 5 year anniversary of the amazingly iconic XXL Freshmen class of 2016. Regardless of what good or bad may have happened in peoples lives that year, we can all agree that 2016 was a very important year for music. It sparked the brand new generation of rap–a …

Our 50 Favorite Joey Bada$$ Songs

Every once in a blue moon, an artist will come by in hip-hop that bridges the ever-dividing gap between the new and the old – someone who embodies the best of both, and someone that everyone can agree on. Joey Bada$$ and the Pro Era crew were just that when they first came out. Employing a 90s-influenced style and a classic aesthetic that inspired a generation of artists in New York and beyond, Pro Era had the technical skill and “pure hip-hop” lyricism that one would expect from a 90s act, while they also possessed a sense for style, sound, and group comradery that resonated with current-day listeners. It was an incredible marriage of innovation and influence that came from a crew of artists talented and wise beyond their years, spearheaded by none other than Joey Bada$$: an artist now with several undeniable classics to his name, all the way from pure-as-it-gets hip-hop tracks to high-flying, radio-ready anthems. Frankly, Joey Bada$$ has done it all, and his still-growing contributions to hip-hop – aesthetically, lyrically, sonically, and otherwise – are not to be underestimated. Not often do we get a talent of Joey’s caliber that fans of any age can get behind, …

The Talents To Come Out Of Homewood Flossmoor High School

Over the past five years of covering the Chicago music scene, interviewing artists, and making relationships with these creatives, I have noticed something that I believe is super intriguing: there have been so many talented individuals who went to Homewood Flossmoor High School at (or around) the same time. It’s not too often that you see this many extraordinary creatives come out of the same place at once — at least I have never heard of something like this before — but even more so, I think it’s a rarity for to have this type of talent come out of the same school especially in the same field. I believe that a big part of this should be credited to the opportunities that Homewood Flossmoor provides to their students, in all avenues, but especially in the music field. The school has engaged students in music industry classes, Jazz orchestra courses, holding rap contests (and giving out prizes to the winners), shooting music videos for their senior students at times, giving them their own radio show to practice freestyling + DJ’ing, and they even take their bands on extraordinary trips to places like Japan. It’s crazy to think about what can …
