Intimidated – [Kaytranada]

Although it might not be the typical type of music I tend to listen to, Kaytranada is one of my all-time favorite producers, and that’s not a difficult thing for me to say at all. He just always knows how to get the vibes right no matter where you’re at. Whether you’re in a club, at a party, cruising down the road in your car, or hanging out with a group of friends, his music is upbeat enough to want to party, but also low-key enough to just bob your head to as you immerse yourself into the music. Not a day goes by where I don’t listen to a song produced by him, whether it’s an original track put out by him or another song that was released by another artist, he always knows how to bring out the best in the singers and rappers he works with, and his latest EP Intimidated is no different. With just 3 songs that clock in just short of 10 minutes long, this project is a nice little gift that will have your speakers bumping before your very eyes. The first track is the title song called “Intimidated” and features H.E.R., a …

Over – [Lucky Daye]

I’ve only gotten familiar with Lucky Daye not too long ago through his work with Kaytranada, but there was no doubt in my mind that he is a star, and I was so stoked to see what else he had up his sleeve. His versatility and ability to rotate through various genres make me, and the rest of his fans, excited for the future, and I truly believe that he deserves so much more recognition than he gets. In a somewhat confusing time in R&B at the moment, he’s a breath of fresh air and is bringing so many great sounds to the landscape of music that I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come. Most recently, I was pleasantly surprised to see him drop off a brand-new song and Machine Operated-directed music video for his record “Over”, and after tuning in, the results were even better than I ever expected. In this amazing music video, Lucky finds himself inside of a very extravagant, old-school-inspired theater full of intricate patterns and vibrant colors that all come together for an unbelievable setting. When we catch our first glimpse of Lucky, he’s sitting in front of a mirror inside some sort …

Designer Frames – [Mick Jenkins] & [Kaytranada]

There are many reasons why I’m so proud to be from a city like Chicago, and one of those many reasons includes artists like Mick Jenkins. I have been a fan of Mick ever since his project The Water[s] which came out back in 2014, and at this point, I was only just starting to get into the local scene further than just Drill music. This mixtape changes my outlook on music and the dexterity that Mick was able to show off throughout the entire project’s duration was incredible, making it a project that I Still make a point to revisit almost too often depending on who you ask. Obviously, it has been many years since that released, and not only has Mick dropped various other projects, he has also clearly grown as a man and as an artist. Over the years, he has collaborated with legendary producer Kaytranada on various releases, and literally every single collab seems better than the last. Well, whether you’re listening to “Your Love”, “P’s & Q’s” or even “Gray Area” off of Kaytra’s Grammy award-winning album Bubba, you’re in for a treat every single time, and I couldn’t be more excited to share that …

JIDtranada Freestyle – [JID]

Dreamville representative JID is one of my personal favorite emcees in 2020, and Kaytranada has been one of my favorite producers for a while now, so when I saw that they connected for a new freestyle titled “JIDtranada”, I was overjoyed! This is easily one of the most ear-pleasing instrumental that I have listened to this year and the way that JID floated over this beat was miraculous, he furthermore proved why he is looked at as arguably the best new rapper in the game. I believe that JID will be considered one of the best of all time by the time his career is said and done, but lucky for us, we have many more years of great music to come from him. Look Easy – [Kaytranada] ft. [Lucky Daye]

As I’ve become more knowledgeable and have dove deeper into the world of music, my admiration for producers has increased tenfold. They’re truly the unsung heroes of most genres of music and they truly have the ability to make or break a record. If you think about many artists in this day and age, without naming any names, of course, they wouldn’t be anything without the incredible beats that form a foundation for them to rap or sing over. These instrumentals add so much personality and sonic vitality to every song which honestly makes these other artist’s jobs so much easier. I’ve mentioned before that Kaytranada is one of my favorite producers out right now, and he continues to impress me with every new release, even though he’s been quiet since last year’s incredible album Bubba came out. I’m beyond excited to say that this silence has finally been broken with the release of his wonderful new track entitled “Look Easy” featuring Lucky Daye. I wasn’t familiar with Lucky Daye at all prior to listening to this song, but after hearing how pure and smooth his voice is, it made complete sense why Kaytra needed to get him on this …

#LF95 – [Lupe Fiasco] [prod. Kaelin Ellis]

Lupe Fiasco is my favorite artist. Notoriously known for his sheer lyricism that only Harvard graduates can fully comprehend, Lupe is likely your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper. Lupe is a true lyricist, but this label alone is not sufficient enough to describe the thirty-eight-year-old unfettered music veteran. Some have even claimed that the musical work and career of Lupe Fiasco was simply ahead of its time, with an audience not yet prepared for the boldly unfiltered content he delivered. Nonetheless, Lupe’s resume is among the very best, with seven studio albums, one Grammy, (twelve nominations) 2006’s GQ man of the year, along with million-plus records sold and streamed. However, these accolades aren’t what matter most to Lupe; it is instead the lifelong respect/acknowledgment from his music peers that shaped and influenced him. For instance, in a joint Instagram live conversation with Joe Budden, Joe revealed Jay-Z himself once stated that he thinks Lupe Fiasco is the best rapper ever. Lupe also tweeted that Jay-Z wanted to sign him to Roc-A-Fella records. Moreover, when legendary emcee Nas was asked by N.O.R.E which rapper most reminds him of himself, Lupe was his answer. Most recently, Off-White CEO and fashion designer Virgil Abloh tweeted that …

Need It – [Kaytranada] ft. [Masego]

Kaytranada has been one of my absolute favorite producers in recent years. I got put onto him after hearing some extremely groovy beats that he created for some of my favorite rappers before realizing he makes his own music in the form of pure instrumentals as well as recruiting the perfect artists to level up his already insane production abilities. He has an impeccable ear when it comes to singers and rappers who will sound great on specific songs he creates with them in mind, and this is just another layer of talent that he has under his belt. Even his strict instrumental tracks are fantastic, not needing lyrics or other artists to tell the story but rather doing it himself through the instruments and sounds he masterfully utilizes. Last year’s Bubba was another example of his abundant skills in the studio, and one of the standout songs on the project was “Need It”, which now has a music video to bring it even more to life than ever before. High-pitched, echoing synths, heart beating drums, and fast-paced percussion create a sound that brings a sort of intensity to the project, diverting it away from some of the lighter, easygoing …

Frontstreet – [Mick Jenkins] ft. [Kaytranada]

It’s a rare moment when you find an artist and a producer who just have such great chemistry and understand each other’s sounds in such a seamless way that you know every time they make a song together, it’s going to be a hit before you even press play. Chicago artist Mick Jenkins and the always groovy and innovative producer Kaytranada have this very dynamic and it’s always fun to see what the duo has up their sleeves. From “Ps & Qs” and “Your Love” to “1000 Xans” and the most recent song off of Kaytranada’s amazing album Bubba “Gray Area”, every song is spectacular although they all bring such a different aesthetic sonically. Some are more intricate while others are just straight-up groovy, but no matter what the vibe they create is, the artistry and understanding between the two talents is something to behold. Mick is pretty fresh off of January’s The Circus, an EP where Mick pretty much prepared his fans for an upcoming full-length project through experimental and wandering thoughts and sounds, but this release isn’t stopping him from dropping off some new loosies for fans to play on repeat for the foreseeable future. Kaytranada brought the …

10%- [KAYTRANADA] ft. [Kali Uchis]

The different stories that KAYTRANADA is able to tell through his production alone isn’t an easy thing to do in the slightest. Although some of his songs have singers and rappers to help get his points further across, a lot of his music is purely instrumental based and shares different narratives and emotions in so many various ways. Last year’s incredible project BUBBA is a prime example because although he included a star-studded lineup of features on half of the album, the other half was his time to isolate himself and share his own feelings the way he knows best. One of, if not the very best, songs on the album has to be “10%”. This single features Kali Uchis who brings a vibe to the song that is spellbinding but also kind of nonchalant. Throughout her hooks and verses, she talks about how she’s not being treated fairly and deserves her cut or her 10%. She continues on to say how she doesn’t care about anyone else and is keeping her thoughts and opinions to herself. The groovy production that KAYTRANADA brought to life for this track paired so very well with the music video that he just released …
