Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial – [Roddy Ricch]

“This ain’t me trying to rap, it’s just me talking to you.” -Roddy Ricch via Apple Music Roddy Ricch has gotten a lot of great looks early on in his career. After the success of his smash hit “Die Young”–which he wrote after the passing of the late XXXTentacion, being selected for the 2019 XXL Freshman List, and now being nominated for THREE Grammys– one for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Ballin’” on the Mustardalbum Perfect Ten, and two more for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for his feature on the legend Nipsey Hussle’searly 2019 hit “Racks In The Middle”. Roddy has been going nowhere but up very fast–that being said, he’s headed into the year 2020 all gas and no breaks with the release of his debut album Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial. Being from Compton, CA, Roddy has had tons of hardships in his life–as many can infer with him being from one of the most dangerous cities in the country. Dealing with PTSD from being in the streets, being exposed to so many negative things at such young age, and not knowing which day is your last–Roddy effortlessly provides the world with a small amount of introspection into his …

Glocks & Drums- [Lil Mexico] ft. [Lil Gotit]

Two of the rap industries brightest rising stars, Lil Mexico and Lil Gotit, recently teamed up for the JetsonMade produced track “Glocks & Drums”. Going into the song after hearing the name, I expected to hear some violent and aggressive bars over an even more hostile instrumental, but to my surprise, quite the opposite played through my speakers. At least as far as the beat goes, JetsonMade created a bubbly, feel-good sound, paving the way for the two rappers to get creative and make a hit. Opposing this high-spirited beat is the lyrics, which are sung in fun-loving melodies and animated autotune, but they definitely contain some more sadistic themes than the vibe of the song would have someone think. The warm feel of this song had me wishing it wasn’t winter in Chicago, but at least I’ll have “Glocks & Drums” to keep my spirits up. Check out this upbeat hit from Lil Mexico and Lil Gotit below. Behind the Boards: IGot20OnMyBeat “Double D’s” Beat Deconstruction

One of the many unsung heroes of the music industry is the producers. I decided to sit down with Charlotte, North Carolina’s own IGot20OnMyBeat — the producer of hit songs such as DaBaby’s “Walker Texas Ranger” — to talk about his origins and most recent rise with DaBaby and Stunna4Vegas. Above, I got to see 20 conduct a Genius-style beat deconstruction of Stunna4Vegas’s hit song, “Double D’s.” Check out the video and the short Q&A that derived from our sit-down. – – – – – – – First of all, I appreciate that you had me over here. When did you start producing? I started about 20 years ago, back when my brother was working with Rico Wade from the Dungeon Family. I was pretty much just being a brother and supporting. After a while, though, I started to take it seriously with my friend Joseph Fields, going to the crib after school and making beats on Fruity Loops. From there, I just stuck with it. So what were you listening to back then? Who inspired you coming up? Oh, man. I was listening to Timbaland, Missy Elliott, a lot of Ginuwine. Also, since Rico Wade was in my ear …

From Memes to the Masses: The Wild Rise of bbno$

Growing up homeschooled in the south of Vancouver, bbno$ never really planned on his career of choice being a rapper. Yet here we are, a few short months after the release of “Lalala” the rapper’s first venture into the Billboard Charts. This is no small feat being that he began is rap career laughing over a Chief Keef beat with his friends before realizing this is something he was talented at. Several years and a few million streams later, it seems that bbno$’s eclectic style of hip-hop has connected with people across the globe in a real way. bbno$ is an incredibly laidback person, which he attributes to his upbringing in Canada, this shines through in his music that is always playful in nature. He has done something out of Vancouver that nobody has really done before, a sign of the times that there is real talent brewing in the often-overlooked Canadian city. While he is a trailblazer of sorts, his career is getting incredibly more serious as he becomes a mainstream artist that gets recognized on the streets by Grandmas, Toddlers, and everybody in between. His brain understands how the internet works, his marketing tactics are crazy but they’ve …

Blowing Candles – [PG RA]

South Carolina’s PG RA quietly dropped one of the best project rap projects in August so far with his new album ‘Blowing Candles’. South Carolina is following up right behind North Carolina in what will be an outbreak of talented rappers deriving from the state. PG RA might have one of the brightest futures out of the new crop of talent that they have to offer. I found myself running through ‘Blowing Candles’ multiple times and it proves to be a thorough body of work from top to bottom. One of the elements that make this project so special is the production. Jetsonmade who has been one of the breakout producers in 2019 producer the majority if not all the songs on the project. Tracks such as “Still Showin’ My Ass” and “First Class Freestyle” server as a great indication of PG RA’s untapped potential. Check out PG RA’s new album ‘Blowing Candles’ in its entirety below.

Behind the Music: Highlighting the Producers of Today’s Sound

By: Lee Mcintosh When it comes to creating great music, the artists are the ones who receive most of the recognition for the creation of the song. Their name is what’s attached to the song, their flows, their likeness, and even the features that the artist may have. However, the song making process all begins with one entity… the producer/s. No matter how creative the lyrics may be, how great the artist’s cadence sounds, the beat behind it all is a huge factor behind the overall appeal of the song, and that is what moves people and captures their attention as soon as they hit play. We are in a different era of music now. Technology has advanced to a point where producers and artists don’t have to be in the studio together anymore. This can be a gift and a curse at the same time. Often so, producers may send over a beat pack to an artist and then they select the songs they want and don’t want. From there, the studio session may be recorded or put on Instagram live, and the producer may be nowhere in sight. This may create confusion as to who actually made the …

On Time – [RonSoCold] Ft. [PG Ra]

Charlotte’s own Ron$oCold has been blessing his fan base with a ton of new music over the summer, and just a few days back he released his latest offering titled “On Time” featuring PG Ra! The first thing that I noticed was the dreamy production that was handled by Jetsonmade before Ron causally jumped on the beat and floated over it for awhile, leading perfectly into the solid contribution from PG Ra on the back end of this joint. Ron has been thriving this year and I just got the chance to see him perform in Chicago the other night & trust me when I say his stage presence was electric, I see nothing but good things from him moving forward, press play below!

Runnin Laps – [Juhovah] feat. [Jetsonmade X 1stclass]

A lot of promising Hip-Hop has come from the Carolinas over the years. Up and coming singer/rapper Juhovah is the next to come out of SC. His newest single, ‘Runnin Laps,’ is that smooth bedroom music we didn’t know we needed. Combining his vocal abilities with triplet flows, Juhovah dynamically delivers his vocals throughout groovy track. The young artist deals with finding a woman he can potentially build a relationship with in the midst of being heavily focused on getting the bread. Produced by Jetsonmade and 1stclass, the song has all the R&B elements to have listeners falling in love. The funky bass and heavy kick perfectly compliment Juhovah’s natural groove and crooning throughout the track. With more on the way, make sure to follow Juhovah, and listen to, ‘Runnin Laps,’ here: Words by Barry R

Oh My God – [Lil Keed]

There are only a handful of artists than when I see they release new music, I drop whatever I’m doing and listen. Lil Keed has quickly become an artist of that caliber after the release of his project Keed Talk To ‘Em that cemented his place as one of the frontrunners of this new wave. On his latest single “Oh My God”, Keed shows just what he is capable of, using a more subdued delivery than we’ve seen in past releases. The Jetson Made beat provides the perfect setting for Keed to ride the pocket of the song in a different way than he has previously, testing the various ways he can push his vocal range. As a sign of true artistry, Lil Keed embraces the uniqueness of his voice and uses it to create soundscapes very few are capable of.  As the Atlanta-native’s output of prolific work continues, it is without question that his next project will raise his profile to superstar status.
