Behind The Track: C-Moski

We’re back again with the Lyrical Lemonade: Behind The Track feature. This week I decided to put the spotlight on C-Moski from Memphis, Tennessee. Moski always had an ear for music, however, he didn’t pursue his career as a producer until his thriving football career came to an end. Sometimes, it’s not what you know, but who you know. Thanks to Blac Youngsta and Ju his manager, Moski had the opportunity to become a part of Heavy Camp and produce three records on ‘Fu*k Everybody 2’ in 2018. Moski began to gain more recognition in 2021 after linking up with 1017 hottest artists on the rise, Pooh Shiesty. Moski is the face behind Pooh Shiesty’s smash Hit “Neighbors” featuring BIG30. This song received over 62 million views on Youtube and went on to become RIAA certified gold on May 27, 2021. The following year, “Neighbors” went platinum on January 18, 2022. I had the opportunity to learn more about C-Moski and his growth throughout the years. Check our interview out below. — Lyrical Lemonade: Where did you grow up? North Memphis, Douglass & Raleigh areas.  Lyrical Lemonade: Were you always involved with music growing up? Or was it something you …

DJ Tay James Interview: A Prime Example of Staying Down Since Day One

“I can make certain calls and tap in with a certain DJ in another part of the world and know what’s being played over there. I can make calls and ask who the hottest new artist or producer is. I don’t think the DJ role will never be obsolete because an algorithm can’t think like a DJ.” -DJ Tay James Since it’s inception, the art of being a DJ has been something that has always been fascinating to watch. Coming from the old days of having to own actual vinyl records, and then transitioning to an all-digital deck, it’s been amazing to see how many DJs actually move along with the times and are able to master a new craft, when their old ways are shifting away. One could argue that the job of a DJ is one of the more important roles in the music business. At a party or event, it’s the DJs job to control the mood and the overall vibes, and listening to the crowd’s visual cues and body language is key. For DJ Tay James, he’s been able to maneuver through many avenues and kept up with the times for many years, and he is …

Get Refreshed: May ’22

“Get Refreshed” is a monthly column by Billy Bugara covering all things digital in the music world. Refresh yourself here. On Sidia… and Dolly’s Midas Touch I’d like to introduce everyone to the world’s best A&R. You’ve probably never heard her name before, just hear me out. It’s d0llywood1. Yes, this obscure, unheard-of A&R doesn’t work for a major label, nor is she even working in this little thing called the “music industry” whatsoever. She’s actually just like all of you out there – an admirer of modern underground music; a proponent of the future; a real music listener, if you will. Many of your favorite artists working today were originally discovered by her, and just because you’ve never heard her name before, doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate her for this very fact alone. In all seriousness, Dolly is not just the best damn rapper and all-around performer for her age. She’s truly the best A&R who’s not really an A&R. From Lei, to Kyenn, to pretty much everyone in SillyTeam who wasn’t popping before the collective started, she’s co-signed some of the most talented acts in the grander Internet music landscape before practically anyone else did before. Much like being a “Paul …

Behind The Track: Featuring Menace

This year at Lyrical Lemonade, I’m starting a feature section titled Behind The Track, specifically to shine a light on producers. A producer oversees all aspects of the creation of a song or album. The choice of song, choice of musicians, instruments, and vocalist(s) and how it all comes together. Your favorite artist makes dope music but without an amazing producer, your favorite song might not be so great after all. In this industry, the artist always receives credit for producing records that the world wants to listen to. However, as you start to learn more about the music business, you begin to understand how important having a dope producer is. Behind the track was created to give acknowledgment to producers that are behind our favorite songs. Whether the song might be big or small, producers deserve just as much credit as an artist. The first producer I had the opportunity to learn more about is Adnan Khan aka Menace from Manchester, England. Menace is the face behind the 2016 mega multi-platinum smash hit ‘Panda’ by Designer. This record sold over 20 million copies and collected over 7 billion + streams and counting. The beat was so popular that artists …

Getting to Know Caribbean Sensation HoodCelebrityy

Caribbean sensation Tina Pinnock, better known as HoodCelebrityy, is taking dancehall music to a new height. The Jamaican-born artist relocated to the United States to live with her great-grandmother at the age of 12. Growing up in the Bronx, Hood quickly became a neighborhood superstar after she began to showcase her deejaying and freestyle skills. Her big breakthrough came in 2015 after collaborating with her childhood friend Cardi B on their smash record “Wine Pon It”. She praises her intercultural childhood and credits Vybz Kartel and Lady Saw for influencing the artist she is today. Widely known for her 2017 viral hit ‘Walking Trophy’ which peaked at #9 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and received 64 million and counting views on Youtube, HoodCelebrityy paved a lane for her music. Her refreshing sound is a mixture of reggae, dancehall, R&B, and trap. By combining her Jamaican heritage with her American upbringing, it’s no surprise to see the success she has received throughout her career. This year, we can hopefully expect a new album from HoodCelebrityy this summer. Check out our exclusive interview with her below. — Lyrical Lemonade: How was it like growing up in Jamaica?  Growing up in Jamaica …

Bloodbath – [Austin Skinner]

Austin Skinner isn’t just the homie, but if you’re somehow unfamiliar with the Virginia-born emcee, you need to know that he is one of the most compelling and entertaining artists in the entire underground music scene, and he has been making his own waves for quite a few years, at this point. He has worked with some extremely notable names throughout the years, and he always shines on these songs whether he’s the feature or he has the other artists as guests, but somehow the mainstream industry has overlooked his talents, and it’s about damn time that they start to listen up and pay him the respect that he deserves. Well, if you didn’t already hear about it, Austin has a project called Rich Junkies dropping in just two short days, and considering this album has a whopping 34 songs on it, this isn’t your average, run of the mill mixtape, and I think it’s going to open people’s eyes to the potential and skillset that Austin has been showing off for years. Normally, I wouldn’t be too hyped about this lengthy of a project because it’s just too long in the current day and age of music, but he …

POOR – [$avvy]

It’s been a minute since we last heard from Nashville multihyphenate $avvy. Following the release of his last project Boys Wear Pearls early last year. Save for last summer’s lone single “Calling It Quits”, it’s been mostly radio silence from our young king. If you live on the east coast you might have been able to catch $avvy perform live, but chances are you’ve been just like me – patiently waiting for new music from one of Nashville’s most exciting newcomers. Luckily today fans are treated to a project many months inthe making, POOR, the newest LP from $avvy himself. Known for his unique take on R&B and hip-hop, POOR sees $avvy flexing his artistic talents even further while sounding more concentrated than ever before. This is a theme that comes up frequently on POOR, as each track showcases a new musical style and aspect of versatility from the young Tennessee artist that fans have missed over the past year. POOR‘s opening track “CALL” features a serene and shimmering mix that sees $avvy leveling his own modern style with a vintage 90’s R&B sensibility. The next minute he’s spitting bars on “CRUCIAL” with laid-back confidence over a nostalgic mix that sounds like it could …

Take the Field – [Shakewell]

Over the past handful of years, Shakewell has steadily proven to be one of the most dependable artists in the underground. No matter what he drops, it is consistently entertaining, energetic, and full of personality, so no matter what song you tap in with, you know you’re in for a treat. At the same time, it seems like he doesn’t receive the praise that he so rightfully deserves, but I am never going to let a day go by where I don’t give him his flowers when I get the chance. Working with superstars like Pouya, $uicideboy$, and so many others, he has solidified a spot in the underground as one of the greats, at least in my book, and he never fails to impress me. Yesterday, Shake teamed up with Mikey the Magician once again to bring another hit to life, this one called “Take the Field”, and if you went I hoping for a nice, relaxing record, you’re in for one of the rudest awakenings ever. The 808s and other percussive elements are as thunderous as ever, and the loud, siren-like synths definitely bring the heat without a doubt. Shake himself is on the prowl, per usual, just …

Crash Out – [Fastmoney Ant]

I feel like not that much. time has passed since I first found out about Chicago’s very own Fastmoney Ant, but I guess he makes moves quickly, and when he makes a statement, you better believe that you’re going to hear about it at some point or another. Since his debut singles “Hawk Em” and “King of Englewood”, the 19-year-old rising talent has received massive co-signs from artists like Gunna and EST Gee as well as fellow Chicago icons like G Herbo and Calboy, just to name a few. I knew that his potential was uncapped and he was going to do some massive things in the music industry, but I guess what I didn’t realize while listening to those couple of songs was just how quickly he’d make a splash or how loud he would be this early on, so exciting is an understatement if you ask me.  After receiving tons of love from artists, media platforms, and most importantly fans, it was only right that he dropped another hit, so I knew exactly what I was going to listen to heading home from work today when I found out he released his T money, Ceejayy, and Nejjii-produced record …

Getting to Know Cincinnati Rapper Skylar Blatt

I love to shed light on women in the music industry who are on the come up. Especially females who came from nothing, but their work ethics are slowly leading them to stardom. Cincinnati rapper Sade Johnson, better known as “Skylar Blatt” is one of my favorite female up-and-coming artists. Her story is so raw and genuine, that it’s not hard not to fall in love with her aura. Growing up was not easy coming from Downtown Cincinnati. When your environment does not reflect the person you hope to become, it’s difficult to find the strength to motivate you every day. However, music saves Skylar’s life and allowed her to become an inspiration for others. Skylar rose to stardom after countless freestyles on Facebook live with her friends. After the release of her second mixtape “XXL”, her career began to take off with multiple offers from labels. After getting co-signed by Meek Mill, she decided to work with Dream Chaser. However, that partnership was short-lived after Skylar did not believe that was the right home for her. After taking some time to rebrand herself, Skylar returned to the scene with her singles “John Wick”, “Urgent Care”, “Mystique”, and “Milli Us”. …
