Vanish – [Giveon]

Long Beach-native Giveon has been making some very substantial moves during the first year of his career. From working with Drake on Dark Lane Demo Tapes, collaborating with big-time producers such as Boi-1da, Wondagurl, and Sevn Thomas, and going on tour with Snoh Aalegra, Giveon has been taking all the necessary steps at such an early point in his career to assure that his name will be around for a very long time. Back in May, I spoke with him about many things regarding his career and he mentioned that he is always known for making the best out of what’s placed in front of him. During this global pandemic, it has altered many artists schedules, game plans, and major career moves thus far. Seeing as the year is only half way over, who knows how long it will last. However, Giveon has took it upon himself to make the best out of this situation, and has created a few quarantine music videos from his debut project, Take Time. Today, he is back with yet another visual from the project titled “Vanish”–the acoustic version. “You said you hate me and you wish I would vanish”, Giveon sings throughout the duration of this …

A Conversation with Sevn Thomas: Toronto Music Scene, Working on ‘Dark Lane Demo Tapes’, Musical Inspirations and More

A reoccurring theme here on Lyrical Lemonade, is speaking in regards to the importance of producers and songwriters. They are some of the individuals that will never not get the respect as some of the most important individuals in the music industry. Songwriters specifically, are amongst the many individuals in the music industry that are almost always in the shadows. Sometimes by design, other times by choice. For Grammy-Nominated songwriter and producer Sevn Thomas, he has the talent level and the resume to prove that he is one of the most diverse and versatile producers in the game–and his songwriting pen is even stronger. Hailing out of Toronto Canada, Sevn Thomas would spend his earlier days in life inside of various recording studios–navigating his way though them all to find his craft and master it. After many trials and tribulations in his life, the singer turned producer’s efforts eventually lead him to linking up with the legendary producer Boi-1da–most known for his contributions all throughout Drake’s career. Sevn’s musical abilities afforded him the luxury of producing and/or writing for a wide-ranging pool of musical acts such as Mac Miller, Travis Scott, Kehlani, Nicki Minaj, and even Drake himself. He is …

A Conversation with Giveon: Success of His Debut EP ‘Take Time’, Early Begininngs, “Chicago Freestyle” and More

“It’s crazy because about fifteen months ago, I was a server at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. To come from that, to where I am now was just amazing to see. -Giveon The journey to becoming a musician can be something that can be very difficult to venture. There are many aspects to consider when you start with that initial thought or dream. What will your sound be? Who are you inspired by? What do you hope to leave the fans with? These questions and many more are some of the things that come to the minds of artists all around the world who may be sitting in their car on their lunch break-trying to find a way out of their hard times. One of the most important questions of all, is how will I be differentiated from my peers? Giveon, the rising star out of Long Beach, California has asked himself each and every one of these questions and then some. What we are witnessing right before our eyes, is the blossoming if the next music sensation that will begin to take over the industry, one harmony at a time.  Giveon’s initial burst into the musical realm came from a …

The Ultimate Drake Album: A Twisted Love Story

FOREWORD In the history of the hip-hop industry, there has never been a more dominant artist than Aubrey “Drake” Graham. The 33 year-old superstar has undergone several re-inventions over the years, much to the delight of his ever-growing fanbase. As much as we have seen him progress, however, the substance in his music carries one glaring constant – heartbreak. It’s no secret that Drake is the master of the introspective love song, and as much as it probably pains him to have to go through experiences that inspire these records, the music has continued to serve as salvation for distraught fans everywhere.  At this point, we owe Drake for giving us all this incredible music at the expense of his own emotional distress. My first thought in paying homage was to curate a carefully-selected 100-song playlist of all his best music. Quickly, I realized that: 1) it’s an impossibly subjective task to narrow down his 100 “best” records, and 2) a playlist that deep is sure to oversaturate the respect we’re trying to pay in this instance. So I took a different approach. I thought to myself, ‘what would Drake appreciate the most from the perspective of a long-time fan? …

HEARTBREAK ANNIVERSARY – [Giveon]

Every so often, a vocalist tugs at a different musical string deeply rooted in me. Giveon, a Long Beach, CA. native does just that. His newest single, HEARTBREAK ANNIVERSARY, instantaneously caught my ear with his incredibly soulful, rooted, and exclusive voice. What surprised me even more was the range he both possesses and uses freely throughout this track’s entirety. “On these days it feels like you need, heartbreak anniversary, do you ever think of me?” Giveon preaches words of classical R&B, with themes of heartbreak, inner battles, and emotional conflict. Though he sticks to common R&B motifs, he adds his own flair with the incredibly distinct delivery and range. As I continue to familiarize myself with Giveon’s discography, I find myself hardly able to stray away from his profile. He’s already developed a large mass of followers, and surely will continue to grow it as his music flies onward to new listeners’ ears and libraries.
