SICK! – [Earl Sweatshirt]

If you and your friends are true fans of music of any kind, it is an inevitable occurrence that the debate of your top 5 favorite artists will come up probably more than once in your lifetime. These discussions always get me going because considering I write about music on a daily basis, everyone always expects me to have an unarguable list that is bulletproof, but the simple fact is that this probably isn’t the case because these things are all subjective. At the same time, my opinion of the top 5 best artists out, as opposed to my personal favorite top 5, is definitely drastically different but I truly and firmly believe that Earl Sweatshirt fits into my list no matter what. Earl has been one of my all-time favorite artists for over a decade at this point, and while his more recent music has been much more experimental and has appealed to a more niche audience, I feel like it just shows his creativity way more than ever before. Additionally, Doris is one of my all-time favorite albums of all time and I believe that there isn’t a single second to skip on the project itself, so whenever …

Breakfast – [Cochise]

It seems like more often than not, I find out about an artist thanks to a feature on a song I had heard long before I realized that an artist blew up and wasn’t just a one-off addition to a record. I feel like this is because artists truly are the best A&Rs, so when they find out about a musician who might not be the most well-known name at the time, they understand their potential and know that they’re going to blow up at some point or another. This is how I first found out about Cochise, because he was included on the song “Right Now” alongside TyFontaine on Internet Money’s super successful debut album B4 The Storm that came out back in 2020, and it was from that very moment that I became obsessed with the Florida-native’s sound and unique style. His words might have been swift and hard to fully understand in the moment at times, but his personality and enthusiasm were two things that latched on to my brain and never let go. Since then, Cochise has blown up more than I expected in the period of time that proceeded that feature, securing a few viral …

No Debate / Big Smoke – [21 Savage]

Some artists in this industry have had to grind and work relentlessly to get the recognition that they do while others seem to have just gotten lucky and been in the right place at the right time. The latter is something that is common in Atlanta because of just how many superstars hail from the Georgia capital who can come across your music by random chance, but that just makes these emcees step up their game in order to live up to their expectations. When talking about 21 Savage, though, he worked as hard as anyone else in order to solidify a name for himself in the music industry, and the rest has been history after some of the immense moments he has experienced throughout his career. While none of these accomplishments can go overshadowed, 21 still knows that he needs to keep up with demand and put out more and more music for fans to enjoy, so when he dropped his two-part record “No Debate” and “Big Smoke” on the last day of 2021 as well as a Marko Steez-directed music video for both tracks, it got me excited to see what else he has up his sleeve moving …

Top 50 Chicago Projects of 2021

Every year, artists hailing from Chicago prove exactly why this is a city that belongs in the upper echelon of music, and this fact grows more abundantly obvious with every release that is put out. Whether a musician is world renown or locally recognized, there is never a shortage of creativity, effort, or innovation, and whether the rest of the country notices this or not, local fans are well aware of the goldmine that we are sitting on here in the Midwest.  Our goal here at Lyrical Lemonade has always been to shine a light on the remarkable sounds coming out of the city every single year, and even when we go in with certain expectations or presumptions, our minds are absolutely blown once we realize just how much dexterous and unique music was brought to life in the span of 12 short months. One thing that is inimitable within the local scene here is simply the sense of community because whether these talents are teaming up with one another or on entirely different levels of fame, everyone seems to show love to each other, ensuring their awareness of the eye-opening and head-turning styles that are being generated across the …

STILL*ALIVE – [DavidTheTragic]

The wait for DavidTheTragic’s much anticipated debut project STILL*ALIVE is finally over after warming up with a series of sonically diverse and artistically forward visuals which energized his loyal audience, as well as giving us the single “ANEMIC” which features David’s friend and Atlanta frontrunner Kenny Mason. STILL*ALIVE is easily David’s most comprehensive offering yet, delivering track-after-tracks that spill honesty and introspection over an eclectic and experimental set of instrumentals that David has always leaned towards since first appearing on many fans’ and writers’ respective radars a couple of years back. The features on the project all fit beautifully and I love to see David collaborate not only with newly established cult-heroes like Kenny Mason, but also with the likes of MuddyMya and Mercury who have both now been interviewed by Lyrical Lemonade and are building something quite special in their own right and I love that David included both of them here. He also calls upon guest verses from his frequent collaborator Burgundy as well as Qi and Kapwani that I was not familiar with until hearing this project and I really appreciate how willing David, and the Atlanta scene as a whole, are to include rising talent on their projects despite not …

Secrets – [Landon Cube]

There are a few names here at Lyrical Lemonade that we’ve seen glow up over the past few years, and seeing their careers take off, maybe thanks to a little help from us, makes me sit back and smile. Obviously, these artists have the skills to take off regardless, but getting a video with Cole can never hurt, so when he made his LL debut in the visual for “Red Roses”, you already knew he had star potential and was capitalizing on this every chance he got. Teaming up with a regular videographer is also a good idea, especially when you have someone as talented as Sam McGrath, and after seeing so many videos from the young and talented director, I always know we’re in for a treat. Most recently, Landon dropped his self-produced track “Secrets”, receiving a little production assistance from Tito Beats, and this was an instant classic as well as something I know I’ll be bumping for the foreseeable future. As far as the video is concerned, Sam is always someone who thinks outside the box, and even after all of the unbelievable flicks he has put together, he somehow managed to outdo himself yet again on …

More Than Friends – [24kGoldn]

24kGoldn is a bit of an anomaly in the best possible way, and I couldn’t be happier for him after the success he has achieved within his music career. When I first found out about him, he had one mixtape out that was awesome, don’t get me wrong, but he was nowhere near as seasoned as he is now, and I have loved to watch his progression. He went from a college dropout who was chasing his dreams to a world-renowned superstar that was living the life that anyone else would envy, and that’s something I can’t hate on. In his debut album El Dorado, he further proved to the industry that he was only getting better with time, and considering he recruited artists like Future, Swae Lee, and others to join him on the album, his pull and influence on music were more than obvious. Although he may have been slightly quiet since his album dropped, there is no silencing this iconic talent, so when I found out he is back and better than ever on his latest single “More Than Friends”, I couldn’t wait to write about it. Produced by Phil and Davy, this one includes a lighthearted …

Heart in a Cold Room – [good problem]

I love music because it is just another way for artists to express their emotions, experiences, and thoughts in one place, and I feel like it is the ultimate form of expression that can not only attract new listeners, but it can connect with people on a deeper, more prominent level than the surface. I know a few artists off the top of my head that I give credit to changing my life, and even saving it during some of the rough moments I’ve been through, and this is never something I’ll take lightly. A few months back, I was put onto good problem who absolutely blew me away because not only was their sound pure and awesome, but they were new to the scene and I’ve been able to watch them grow from their very first song on. They’ve been on a hot streak ever since they dropped their debut record, but it seems like their chemistry and artistry only get stronger and better with time, and that is more apparent than ever on their latest single “Heart in a Cold Room”. They’re always incorporating build-ups within their instrumentals, usually remaining calm and composed at first before allowing the …

For All the Time I Fell on My Face – [Damien Styles]

Damien Styles is an artist who I never expected to hear about, but from the moment I was put onto his very first single up until now, he has blown me away with every single song he has put out. In my earlier days of listening to him, I had comparison him to Lil Peep because their voices and vibes seemed slightly similar, but after getting even more familiar with the rising star, I realized just how different and individualistic he truly is. In almost every track I’ve heard from him, he has the epic sound that seems to fill a room whether you’re listening at a massive function or alone in your room. I’m not sure if this is because of the strong vocal layers he often uses, the grand production that he always kills, or simply his captivating and powerful personality, but either way, he is simply someone you can’t sleep on any longer. I have been believing this fact for months and months now, but I don’t think that statement has been more true than it is now that his debut project For All the Times I Fell on My Face is out. There is not a …
