Bored In The House – [Curtis Roach] x [Tyga]

Last week, a friend of mine was scrolling through a series of Tik-Tok’s all with the same ridiculously catchy song about being bored at home (as we all probably have been sometime in the past few weeks). To my surprise, the artist behind this viral song is one I’ve been familiar with for a couple of years already and have covered on Lyrical Lemonade multiple times in the past. I recognized the lighthearted, slick delivery of Detroit artist Curtis Roach’s comical bars almost instantly and was even more intrigued by the viral trend he had just started. “Bored In The House” is the infectious quarantine anthem we’ve all been waiting for. It’s extremely simple, and Roach knows how to not take himself too seriously while still spitting some impressive bars about being stuck at home all day. The song’s hook is dumb simple, walking a fine line between obnoxious and genius but coming out on the latter side thanks to Roach’s charisma behind the mic. As if the song weren’t viral enough, it also gets a major feature appearance from none other than Tyga who also spits an outstanding barrage of social distance-inspired heat. Luv Bug – [Curtis Roach]

Curtis Roach’s discography so far has tied the rising Detroit artist’s name with bright and vibrant hip-hop that’s informed by his natural optimistic verses and bouncy production. He continues to build off this quality of his music on his latest project, ‘Luv Bug’. The 4-song EP from Curtis showcases him in his feelings in the purest way possible, singing and flowing about love in all the forms it takes. If Curtis’ previous project ‘Lellow’ was meant to capture the warmth and fast-pace of the summertime, ‘Luv Bug’ almost serves as the wintertime companion piece to that. While Curtis’ lively and melodic bars still come through on ‘Luv Bug’, the energy of this EP feels more chill than his previous release. This more laidback approach allows Curtis to expand his sound more into the depths of RnB especially on songs like “Call Me When u Get Home” where his soft vocals serve as the focal point. Overall, ‘Luv Bug’ gives listeners more to be excited about from this rising talented artist and leaves the door wide open in terms of the potential he possesses. Our Latest Compilation – [Closed Sessions]

Closed Sessions is an independent hip-hop label who have been doing their thing in the Chicago community for a decade-plus, they have helped advance the careers of plenty of the city’s gems and currently have a stacked roster, but today they are finding themselves on our site as a collective with their recent album release simply titled Our Latest Compilation. The good people over at CS have always heard a good ear for talent, so on this project, they recruited some skilled artists such as Khary, Open Mike Eagle, Dave B, Kipp Stone, Kemba, and the Chicago legend ShowYouSuck. However, they didn’t forget to display what talent they have in their own building, as Ajani Jones & Mother Nature got some bars off + this tape was entirely produced by the goat BoatHouse. If there is one thing that the folks over at Closed Sessions can do flawlessly, it’s piece together a project, I highly suggest that you give this one a spin. Smash that play button below! Premiere: Freckles – [Curtis Waters]

Being a dedicated fan of rising artists, I have spent many hours listening to snippets on IG or YouTube on an endless loop until the song is eventually released. Today, we are premiering a song that has gotten several thousand plays on Instagram along after Curtis teased it a few months back. The song’s name is “Freckles”, its an ode to somebody Curtis has been crushing on with a hook that will be stuck in your head for weeks after the first listen. Curtis Waters is an artist that exudes originality, his music comes off as incredibly playful and wildly approachable for fans of any genre really. His boyband ready vocals pair incredibly well over the self-produced beats that sound like a distorted pop dream sequence ready for any person feeling lost to drift away into it. Each line feels incredibly personal, if you follow Curtis than you know how open he is with his emotions. The man just wants what we all want, to find love. The visuals match the energy of this single perfectly, the VHS shots capture Curtis running around a field on a sunny day that perfectly highlights the bright nature of this song. He also …

Gassed Up – [Curtis Roach]

This summer, Curtis Roach released his ‘Lellow’ EP—a ray of sunshine channeled through seven tracks that fused elements of jazz, funk, and footwork music from the artist’s home city of Detroit. Today, Roach premieres a new music video for one of the project’s standout songs, “Gassed Up”. “If you’re in a relationship, you should gass up your S/O every chance you get,” Roach said about the video’s concept. “When you at a party and you not feeling the vibes, create your own vibes. Just know you’re the shit baby girl.” “Gassed Up” showcases Roach’s versatile skill set as he switches the pace of his flow throughout the song to match the laidback tone set by producer Cheer Captain. Roach ties everything together with a memorable hook and a guest verse from artist Nolan The Ninja to offer another switch up. The video, directed by @juney.bae, matches the low-key, late-night vibe of the track, capturing Roach driving around at night and kicking back at a party. Watch the video for “Gassed Up” below, and check out Roach’s lighthearted ’Lellow’ EP here.

Lellow – [Curtis Roach]

Through his discography thus far, Curtis Roach has introduced listeners to his brand of bright, upbeat hip-hop with influences from jazz, funk, and footwork music. This week, Roach honed this sound into his most concentrated project yet, titled ‘Lellow’. The new EP shows growth for the Detroit artist as he carves out a sonic niche that’s full of bouncy summertime beats and lively raps. While his buoyant persona could draw comparisons to artists like Aminé or KYLE, Roach sets himself apart with effortlessly executed melodies and an ability to blend multiple styles into his own. Whether he’s drawing inspiration from Detroit’s historic jit sound and movement on “WJIT” or declaring his arrival on the motivational opening track “You Got It”, Roach navigates different styles without losing his own. Curtis Roach’s joy feels contagious, and it’s this exact care-free attitude that inspired the EP. A reference to the solar plexus chakra (associated with the color yellow), ‘Lellow’ embodies unbounded energy and playfulness. “It reminds me of when I was a kid and used to say Yellow like Lellow,” Roach explains. “It’s that pure freeing feeling you had as a kid when you put your hand out the window riding in the …

WJIT – [Curtis Roach]

Curtis Roach first caught my ear in 2017 when he released his energetic Highly Caffeinated mixtape, and since then, the Detroit artist has been pushing his jazz-influenced sound to even more exciting places. Today, Roach returns with a music video for his latest single, “WJIT”. Taking form as “Curtis the Jit Man’, Roach brings us to the roller rink for an ultimate homage to Detroit’s influential dance scene. The track itself also takes inspiration from the city’s dance music, incorporating the upbeat rhythms that powered the viral fast footwork movement. Roach embodies this energy with finesse, simultaneously boastful and carefree in his verses. It’s hard to stay still while bumping “WJIT”, and after watching its equally infectious visual accompaniment, you’ll probably be looking up the closest roller rink near you too. Anxietea – [Curtis Roach]

An artist that goes by the mae of Curtis Roach is making his Lryical lemonade debut this afternoon with his brand new music video for “Anxietea”. I came across Curtis while browsing through our music submissions, and I quickly fell in love with the melody that he created with this song, and the video just helps bring that energy to life. Curtis quickly caught my attention with his impressive & honest rhymes, discussing his struggles with anxiety throughout the entire duration of this one & I believe that will resonate well with listeners.
