The Narcissist – [Brady Watt] x [Westside Gunn] x [DJ Premier]

“I cooked up this composition how I usually do, just jamming in the studio. I used three basses on this; my fretted, fretless, and upright. DJ Premier deemed it worthy enough to send to the one and only, Westside Gunn, who is and has been my favorite artist out for a minute now. Preem reached out to Gunn and he laced two verses, and the hook same night. I couldn’t even believe it. At first, I intended it to be a drum-less joint (in Griselda fashion), but Preem insisted he put drums on it AND a classic scratch hook using vocals from none other than Benny the Butcher and Conway the Machine. This song really manifested itself, and I’m honored to have my name next to these titans. When the song was complete I then commissioned Jim Warren to hand draw an animated film based around the lyrics. It took him about five-months of STEADY work to complete it. I’m so glad we took the time to do it, because Westside Gunn is so heavy in the art world; it had to be next level to meet his standards” – Brady Watt Certified rap legend Westside Gunn linked up with …

Slime Language 2 – [YSL] [Young Thug]

While the idea of rap groups as a whole may be slowly disappearing in the rap game, we have been seeing tons of cliques and rap labels that may have tons of solo artists, but appear to have that group-like demeanor. As of late, we have seen Quality Control–home of rap acts lie Migos, Lil Yachty, Lil Baby, and more. Griselda Records consists of Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine & Benny the Butcher. Last but not least, we have seen YSL flourish in the rap game since Young Thug took the scene by storm. If you do a bit of digging, you will see Young Thug interacting with tons of members of YSL before they were famous as he built them up to become the stars they are today. Gunna used to appear in Thugger’s music videos before signing to his label, and a young and determined Lil Keed played his music for Thug before the fame and he ultimately ended up signing with Thug as well. Here we are today and Young Thug is here to showcase his latest body of work alongside his star-studded YSL crew, Slime Language 2. With the original Slime Language project dropping in 2018, it was met …

Pissy Staircase – [A$AP Twelvyy] x [A$AP Rocky]

Having been in the game for a while, it’s always exciting to see members of New York’s A$AP Mob come together to deliver hard and catchy bars.  The incredibly talented A$AP Twelvyy dropped the “Noon Yung” album on 10/30, the sequel to “Before Noon” and he’s got company; an incredibly talented group of features including Billz Raw and Conway the Machine. One of the catchiest highlights is Pissy Staircase where Twelvyy is accompanied by fellow mob member, A$AP Rocky, the track delivers a smooth dystopian instrumental that is sure to have the listener moving their heads along. Twelvyy starts the track with a clean catchy chorus that really works well with the beat before both rappers go on to deliver smooth clean rhymes that attract the listener to the record, being reminiscent of old-school boom-bap rap from their own home, New York. Take some time and unwind with the rhymes tonight and stream the song down below. Produced by Héctor Delgado and Zoneout Worldwide

Babies & Fools – [Freddie Gibbs] & [The Alchemist] ft. [Conway the Machine]

Ever since Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist’s collaborative project Alfredo came out so many months ago, at this point, I haven’t gone even a few days without running through the album in its entirety. I’ve stated many times in the past how much I enjoy every single aspect of this project, and it just seems like Al can provide an incredible foundation for any artist to go crazy on. Then again, Freddie Gibbs isn’t just any artist, so when the two masters of music teamed up, it was a Heaven send and the results obviously speak for themselves. When it comes to all of the music videos that have dropped to accompany this effort, they’re all even better at elevating the storyline of the project than I could’ve ever expected, so I always make sure I tune in and share their incredibility with as many people as I possibly can. Whether he’s evading law enforcement and heading out to another country with the help of Rick Ross in “Scottie Beam” cruising around on a yacht with Benny the Butcher like notorious the notorious kingpin in “Frank Lucas”, or simply living one of the most interesting lives in the entire world, …

Simply Done – [Armani Caesar] x [Benny the Butcher] x [DJ Premier]

Known as the first lady of Griselda Records, Armani Caesar has released the first track off her debut GxFR project The Liz, which is set to drop on September 18th of this year. Produced by the iconic DJ Premier, the single “Simply Done” features Caesar’s fellow Griselda affiliate Benny the Butcher, and is accompanied by dntwatchtv visuals. While listening to the record, I immediately understood Caesar’s appeal, taking note of her confident tone, lyrical flare, and gritty rhyme-scheme. Moreover, despite Armani Caesar’s new member status, the chemistry displayed between her and Benny is effortless, as she sets the tone before passing the baton for the Butcher’s verse. It’s also clear that Caesar has immense versatility, considering she’s capable of dissecting a golden DJ Premier instrumental or a certified trap banger. The production on The Liz all but confirms the case in point, with listed credits from DJ Premier, 808Mafia, Camouflage Monk, JR Swiftz, Denny Laflare, Bone8, Animoss, and StinDrms. Of course, the only features needed on the project are Caesar’s Griselda teammates – Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, and Benny The Butcher. Listen to “Simply Done,” the first single off The Liz by watching the music video below!

Scottie Beam- [Freddie Gibbs] & [The Alchemist] ft. [Rick Ross]

The Alchemist has been on an absolute roll this year so far. Then again, it’s not out of the question to say that he’s been on a roll for decades, so it’s shouldn’t come as a surprise in the slightest. He has released three unbelievable projects with Boldy James, Conway the Machine, and of course, Freddie Gibbs, and each one of these tapes he was able to bring something different yet equally impressive to the table. I have to admit that I’ve listened to his and Freddie’s project Alfredo more than the other two, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that I can’t believe the chemistry and bond that Al is able to form with every artist he works with. One of my favorite songs off of the aforementioned project has got to be “Scottie Beam” which also features Rick Ross. In case you somehow haven’t heard it up until this point, The Alchemist utilizes mystifying synths of some sort coupled with very relaxed, toned-down tapping percussion and equally calm drums to provide a jazzy and beyond smooth instrumental. Freddie’s delivery is calm and composed, but it almost sounds like there’s slight aggression in his voice that he’s …

Deal Or No Deal – [Benny The Butcher]

With rap capos Boldy James, Conway The Machine, and Westside Gunn, sharing the headlines, Griselda affiliate Benny The Butcher is ready to make strides in 2020. Benny is coming off a three-year project run, having dropped Butcher on Steroids, (2017) Tana Talk 3, (2018) and The Plugs I Met (2019) respectively. “187 with Griselda wrote in Arabic, murder I’m aware of it, cause I’m who takin’ care of it..” is the chilling opener from Butcher off his latest titled “Deal Or No Deal,” produced by the Buffalo, New York favorite Daringer. Daringer’s instrumentals are always a perfect match for Griselda due to the producer’s ominous signature sound; every collaboration of theirs is like an unreleased scene from your favorite mafia film. Not to mention, Benny is the head of the Black Soprano family. Benny’s motto “violence the only way you answer violence” is well understood by Daringer, incorporating a beat that perfectly emphasizes DANGER to the listener. Labeling Griselda the “super-villains to the music business,” Benny announces that he’s made coke rap sound like a new invention, all while abiding by actual street codes in real life. Butcher implicitly implies there is a good chunk of artists attempting to maintain a similar identity, …

Pray For Paris – [Westside Gunn]

Griselda Records is taking no prisoners in 2020. From Conway The Machine’s recent collaborative Lulu EP with The Alchemist, to their latest signing Boldee Jame’s The Price of Tea in China album, (also with The Alchemist) it is frightening to think what the group has left in store. Exceptional projects serve as a thorough reminder that music is art and art is music. Westside Gunn has publicly shared via his instagram to never call him a rapper, since he is an artist; I have no objections to his request. Gunn’s latest, Pray For Paris album exemplifies just that, with the cover art responsibility handed to Off-White CEO Virgil Abloh. The cover is specifically an edit of Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath painting, with Virgil adding two iced-out necklaces. One necklace is a Jesus Piece and emblem of Westside Gunn as a child; whereas, the other features his present self with a rightful crown on his head. The album’s run time is a balanced forty-one minutes and nineteen seconds, with twelve tracks total not counting the epic “400 Million Plus Tax” introduction, which gave me heavy Uncut Gems PTSD. Ironically, Tyler The Creator mentions Josh Safdie on “327,” referencing the …

A Conversation with DJ Premier: One Of The Best Yet

DJ Premier is a pioneer of hip-hop and an absolute living legend, he has accomplished an astonishing amount in his career and just about a month ago he released his latest masterpiece, a brand new Gang Starr album titled One Of The Best Yet. I grew up a huge fan of Gang Starr in my adolescent years as I am sure many of the people reading this did as well, so when I first head about this new album I was in complete shock, partially because their last album prior to this came out way back in 2003 and also because it has been nearly a decade since the passing of the legendary emcee Guru who made up of one half of the group. This was the first time in his career that DJ Premier had to piece together an album without Guru by his side helping him compose it, he had previously recorded verses that we anywhere from 10-20 years old and he somehow managed to craft it into a tremendous + memorable body of work. Needless to say, when I got the opportunity to interview one of my idols and someone who I have studied like DJ Premier, …

Kool G – [Westside Gunn] ft. [Benny The Butcher] [Conway The Machine]

Just when we need it, Westside Gunn is back to deliver fans a new project to carry out the rest of 2019, and cement this year as the year of Griselda. The crew makes it impossible to remain absent from the daily rotation of their fans, dropping high-quality music in a large abundance.  This new track “Kool G” features Benny and Conway once again, and continues to prove why Griselda is a force to be reckoned with. Like the trio’s last single, Dr. Bird’s, Gunn starts off this track and absolutely snaps with a buttery rhyme scheme and relentless delivery. He hands it over to Conway and then Benny, who finishes off the track on a high note, also teasing Tana Talk 4. None of the members rap for much more than thirty seconds on this one, and this all killer, no filler approach warrants repeated listens.  The beat on this one, done by Alchemist & Daringer, is sinister and atmospheric, fitting for the timing of the release of this upcoming project on Halloween.  Hitler Wears Hermes 7 is due out tomorrow, which is Gunn’s second project of the year, and if this one is anywhere near as good as …
