The Ultimate Drake Album: A Twisted Love Story

FOREWORD In the history of the hip-hop industry, there has never been a more dominant artist than Aubrey “Drake” Graham. The 33 year-old superstar has undergone several re-inventions over the years, much to the delight of his ever-growing fanbase. As much as we have seen him progress, however, the substance in his music carries one glaring constant – heartbreak. It’s no secret that Drake is the master of the introspective love song, and as much as it probably pains him to have to go through experiences that inspire these records, the music has continued to serve as salvation for distraught fans everywhere.  At this point, we owe Drake for giving us all this incredible music at the expense of his own emotional distress. My first thought in paying homage was to curate a carefully-selected 100-song playlist of all his best music. Quickly, I realized that: 1) it’s an impossibly subjective task to narrow down his 100 “best” records, and 2) a playlist that deep is sure to oversaturate the respect we’re trying to pay in this instance. So I took a different approach. I thought to myself, ‘what would Drake appreciate the most from the perspective of a long-time fan? …

Sick and Tired- [Iann Dior] ft. [Machine Gun Kelly] & [Travis Barker]

Considering one of the main genres of music I grew up with was punk rock and other similar subgenres, I’ve been a major fan of the punk-influenced Rap music that artists have been creating. Obviously, Lil Peep brought this subgenre into a much larger light than ever before but acts like Lil Tracy, Cold Hart, and other GothBoiClique members have helped with the inception of this style of music and continue to influence new generations. Iann Dior is one of those artists in the new generation of punk Rap music who intelligently signed to the incredibly popular Internet Money Records label. With the help of Internet Money, Iann has racked up millions of plays on some of his biggest songs and has even recruited some mainstays in the industry to join him on certain tracks. On his most recent offering “Sick and Tired”, Iann invited Machine Gun Kelly and the legendary drummer Travis Barker to accompany him on this all-around banger. High-pitched guitar plucks and insane Hip-Hop percussion lays the pavement for this obviously punk rock-influenced hit. Unlike many of his counterparts making similar music, Iann opts for autotune-absent vocals which allow his voice to shine, preventing it from getting …

Animal – [Cold Hart]

One of my absolute favorite subgenres of Hip-Hop music has to be the punk-influenced style the Lil Peep brought into the spotlights so many years ago. This music brings me back to the days that I used to constantly listen to punk rock, adding a sort of nostalgic element to the already appealing music that’s being created. The usually somber guitar riffs mixed in with elements of Rap and other genres brought a new sound to the industry, and it was a sound that took the underground by storm. Although there have always been darker, more introspective styles within the Rap industry, this new punk style placed emphasis on the emotions that one might feel when listening, elevating these feelings through masterful production and sometimes shocking lyrics. Cold Hart is one of the original and best artists doing this, and he’s been perfecting his craft for years and years, influencing much of the new generation of underground artists. Talent just oozes from him and I feel as if this goes somewhat unnoticed considering all of the things he has done for the underground Hip-Hop scene. If you don’t believe me, just listen to his latest song “Animal”. Emotional guitar chords, …

Had 2- [RONSOCOLD]

RonSoCold is one of the most talented underground artists in recent memory. Although he uses heavy autotune on all of his songs, he finds a way to keep it fresh and his music never sounds repetitive in the slightest. His cadences are simple but catchier than most of the hit songs on the charts, and his overall style from his music to his fashion sense is top-notch. The North Carolina rapper is back with a very brief but impactful single called “Had 2”, which is off of his upcoming project set to release at some point this year. Lil Tecca, the young rapper and producer who took the world by storm last year and is looking to do the same in 2020, absolutely murdered the production. He included some gallant, airy synths that come in waves paired with subtle bass to accent the quick hats and claps, creating the foundation for this hit. With his trademark heavy autotuned vocals, RonSoCold brought so much vigor and energy to his verse. His short, choppy lines discussing his come up, drugs, and the emotions he deals with bring this single full circle to create a masterpiece. He ended up going all out for …

Kaash Paige: On The Cusp of a Moment

Photo by @nxphew You almost get the sense that Kaash Paige doesn’t realize she’s famous. For one of the most buzzing young singers in music right now, she’s remarkably regular, whatever that means, and she’s proud to be that way. The 20 million Spotify streams on “Love Songs” haven’t gotten to her head, and quite frankly, neither has anything else. Kaash is still living life just as she did a year ago, only now, with a lot more attention. “These past few weeks have been crazy, everywhere I go. People be crying and I’m like what the hell [laughs], why are you crying?” Earlier this year, it was “Love Songs” that blew up on TikTok, propelled straight from her humble home studio into the headphones of tens of millions of people. Now, with her debut project carving out its deserved spot on the top charts, Kaash Paige is ready to show that her viral moment wasn’t a fluke. After all, TikTok might present an unprecedented rise in the scale of virality, but it doesn’t guarantee that in six months, anyone will hold onto that moment. “I’m not even where I want to be yet. I’m still young, and I know …

Our Bond – [Polo G]

Every so often, I find an artist that will go on a hot streak of tracks that I can’t stop listening to. And unfortunately in most cases, these streaks seem to come to an abrupt end or the artist inexplicably fades out of my rotation. However, Polo G has maintained his hot streak since the first song I heard of his. It started in 2018 with “Finer Things” and carried on through hits like “Battle Cry,” “Deep Wounds,” and his breakout hit “Pop Out.” So when I saw a new track on my  feed, my expectations were as high as ever – and Polo did not disappoint. “Our Bond” has a flawless, poetic feel in which Polo pours out his heart about his realities in rising into stardom and the relationships lost along the way. “I cut so many off, my heart be colder than December be.” The Chicago treasure is expected to release his album Die a Legend tomorrow, June 7, and if the single “Our Bond” is a preview of what’s to come, expect to see Polo G’s name atop the charts for weeks following the album’s release. Stream “Our Bond” Below!
