Nostalgia is Dead – [Cherele]

Florida hip-hop can pretty much be considered an entirely different genre, in my opinion, because it seriously sounds nothing like any other region in the world in terms of rap. I mean, there are so many people from Kodak Black and Hotboii to $NOT and Cochise who are making equally fantastic records, but they just sound nothing like one another which makes this such a diverse and flourishing wonderland for music. Depending on the day, I may say that one of these styles is my favorite over another, but regardless of the timing, I am a solidified fan of both types of rap that are coming out of the southern state, and it would be like picking a favorite child. Different areas of Florida seem to produce different sounds, and even though Fort Myers is known for being a vacation destination more often than it is a hip-hop hub, Cherele is here to flip the script and I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about that. Women in rap have totally shaken things up, and while there are a ton of different personalities in the industry regardless of gender, I truly think that Cherele just might be one person that you simply …

FINALLY – [Cochise]

Cochise is honestly not someone that has been on my radar for nearly as long as a lot of other artists that I frequently listen to, but from the moment I first heard him rap, I knew he was going to change the landscape of music. In fact, I remember the first verse I had ever heard from him which happened to be on the song “Right Now” with TyFontaine on Internet Money’s debut album B4 the Storm, and even though I’m sure I was late to the party then, I have made sure to not forego any other music from the Florida emcee. If you haven’t kept up with Cochise, you missed out on some massive accomplishments with the most recent being his selection for the 2022 XXL Freshman list, but that was before his album THE INSPECTION even dropped, so he was lining things up to really make a splash more than ever this year. On his album, there are 13 self-produced or co-produced songs that last almost 36 minutes long with insane features like Chief Keef and Young Nudy, but I am even more thrilled about the fact that this is only the beginning for the young …

THE INSPECTION – [Cochise]

In the wake of Cochise’s 2021 debut Benbow Crescent, few artists have made me eagerly anticipate their upcoming records like him. A year and a handful of singles later – Cochise returns to us this week with THE INSPECTION – a tightly-woven collection of tracks primed to decorate your weekly rotation all summer long. Inspired by Inspector Gadget and Florida’s plugg scene – Cochise’s newest LP shows his signature sound evolving outwards while still sounding as concentrated as ever. Though tracks like “TURN IT UP” and “HALO” may sound like heightened instances of the young artist returning to form, THE INSPECTION is full of tracks that see Cochise trading in his psychedelic energy and adopting a more hard-hitting hip-hop register. Chief Keef and Yung Nudy even appear as guests on “HUNT” and “NICE” respectively, and tracks like “PROFESSOR PROFESSOR” see Cochise holding nothing back as he delivers cleverly-written bars with ah high-octane ferocity. Perfect for old and new fans of Cochise, THE INSPECTION is a record that is nothing if not worth the wait. With more music and visuals likely set for release before the end of the year, there’s never been a better time to be a Cochise fan. Check out Cochise’s …

Fanfiction – [CIB]

Summer is officially one week away, which means it’s time to start carefully piecing together our weekly rotations to soundtrack our trips to the beach and lazy pool days. Though many of us are currently knee-deep in the rollouts of Pi’erre Bourne, Duke Deuce, and Cochise – today our ears are graced with the refreshingly unique indie-pop track “Fanfiction” from LA-via-NY singer/songwriter CIB (Complete In Box). You might have caught a glimpse of her newest release in a viral TikTok she made showing off some “NYU x Taylor Swift” merch earlier last month, but this week our queen returns with the track in full, and luckily, it was worth the wait. Synthesizing raw pastoral acoustics with modern electronic production, CIB leads listeners on a journey through existential and romantic tension in “Fanfiction”‘s cathartic verses. Like her previously-viral banger “Mott St.”, “Fanfiction” showcases an artist whose wisdom is just as full of charm as it is understated – unafraid of taking risks while wielding an unhealthy affinity for clever songwriting. On “Fanfiction” CIB notes, “Nostalgia and futurism are two themes that are deeply intertwined in my music and visual identity. Fanfiction is the “internet babies” love song. The song captures the …

Turn It Up – [Cochise]

As spring slowly turns to summer, it seems like Cochise season is finally upon us. Today the Benbow Crescent star returns with his second single of 2022 “Turn It Up”, an explosive and cinematic blend of cloud rap and Cochise’s signature charm. 2022 has been a busy year for the Florida rapper – between gearing up for his next studio LP THE INSPECTION and touring with Aminé and 454, our king has had a lot on his plate recently. Whether you view “Turn It Up” as the latest step of an album rollout or the result of pent-up creative energy is not important, as “Turn It Up” has immediately become my song of the summer…and it’s not even summer yet. Regardless of relationship status or sexual orientation, Cochise’s new banger is guaranteed to have you standing on the table screaming “I GOT TWO GIRLS / AND THEY TOO DIFFERENT”. I have no idea what drug Cochise is pumping into his tracks, but there’s something so infectiously hypnotic about the mixes he chooses and the vocal performances he so effortlessly lays down. Between his eclectic energy and the borderline heavenly beat switch that happens around the song’s second act, “Turn It Up” …

Nostalgic Discrepancy 220XX – [Broly500!]

Mysterious SoundCloud prodigy and hip-hop mastermind Broly500! returned to us Friday with “Nostalgic Discrepancy 220XX”, his second single this month. Though admittedly little is known about Broly500!, we can confirm that his newest track is a futuristic entry into an already-stacked discography. Like the title would suggest, “Nostalgic Discrepancy 220XX” is a forward-thinking and cinematic entry that blends energy from SoundCloud’s past and present into something entirely unique. Sounding like a complicated blend of Travis Scott, Cochise, and Juice Wrld, it’s hard not to immediately love Broly’s affinity for rapping, melody, and writing. With more music and visuals likely slated for the near future, it’s only a matter of time until Broly500! enters the upper echelon of hip-hop superstardom. Check out Broly500!’s “Nostalgic Discrepancy 220XX” below:

The B4BMG LIVE Experience – [TyFontaine] x [Sparky]

Though the DMV’s world of upcoming hip-hop artists is full of incredible and genre-pushing talent, nobody in that scene is making music quite like TyFontaine. Earlier this year the young rapper/singer released B4BMG: The Experience – a four-track EP bursting at the seams with perfectly-polished bangers and a sound so cinematic sometimes I watch movies on mute while listening to it. The EP, however, was simply serving as a harbinger of things to come. Announced almost two years ago, this week TyFontaine returns with his newest LP Beautiful Michi Girls AND an insane visual collaboration with Sparky – both showing off his vocal affinity and limitless potential. To say that Beautiful Michi Girls was highly-anticipated might be an understatement, as TyFontaine’s fans have been patiently waiting on their king to deliver the follow up to 2021’s Ascension for what feels like an eternity (It’s me, I’m fans – and it’s been a year). Effortlessly flowing between hip-hop, alt-R&B, and trap cuts so melodic that they begin to enter the pluggnb realm – TyFontaine’s BMG is a powerful showcasing of dynamic talent from an artist that always keeps fans on their toes. Who else can sing like Ty Dolla $ign one moment, and then …

from me 2 you – [454]

Fans of 454 rejoice! This week we have finally been blessed with a new track. “from me 2 you” is the newest banger from the Florida rapper, marking his third release of the year following the previously-dropped singles “SKITTLES” and “GATORLAND”. Though our king has been a bit radio silent this year, 2022 has been a pretty busy year for the young rapper. Though 2021 saw 454 dropping two mixtapes and being featured on Frank Ocean’s Homer website, 2022 has seen 454 tour with fellow Floridian Cochise and Aminé in addition appearing on Denzel Curry’s “SaNJURO” and even playing Coachella. The grind never stops though, as this week fans are graced with “from me 2 you” – a dreamy and minimalistic plugg track that slowly morphs into a more cosmic and laid-back banger primed for your upcoming summertime rotation. Self-produced and self-mixed, “from me 2 you” is hopefully a harbinger of more music to come, but I’m totally fine with waiting. Patience is a virtue that can only be earned the hard way – so if this is your first introduction to 454, consider this the perfect time to do a deep dive through his catalog. Check out 454’s new …

EDEN – [MuddyMya]

Of all the upcoming music scenes in the US, very few are pushing the culture forward like Florida and Atlanta. With artists like Destroy Lonely, Cochise, and 454 paving the way for the next generation of plugg/regalia/cloud rap inspired rappers – the future of hip-hop is looking better than ever. MuddyMya is a perfect example of this, and luckily this week she returns to us with her newest EP EDEN – the follow-up to 2021’s MUDDYWORLD. The last time we saw Mya, we were celebrating the release of her single “i see you!” – a hazy and hypnotic banger packed with futuristic energy so infectious that it was hard not to list her as one of Atlanta’s most promising new artists. EDEN carries this momentum perfectly with a small colelction of 5 tracks that if nothing else, put MuddyMya’s name on 2022. Between her washed-out vocal layers, spacious production, and hard-hitting verses that alternate between melodic (“PEACH SPRITE”) and borderline ambient (“WAIT4U”) at a moment’s notice – MuddyMya’s forward-thinking musical talents have made her an artist that needs to be on your radar this year. Last time I asked if we would see an album from MuddyMya this year, and with an …
