Over the past few months, I’ve found myself becoming increasingly interested in an artist named Diamond Cafe, but not until now, when I sat down to write about Cafe’s newest release, “Real Thing (Demo),” did I realize that I can’t quite put this fascination into words. I suppose the best way to put it is that Cafe’s music just feels right; it possesses an exhilarating twang, an almost Michael Jackson-esque style of animation and groove, and more than anything else, an absolutely incredible vocal talent to lead the charge.

Needless to say, the latest demo perfectly attests to the wonderous, weird world of Cafe’s music. Supported by a funky instrumental, this song seemingly fuses the worlds of soul and funk into one, off-the-wall combination that you simply can’t help but love. “Real Thing” is relaxed and emotional, but it’s also effortlessly charismatic, using Cafe’s unorthodox vocal style as a source of fuel. With this, there’s an innate charm to Diamond Cafe, and as eclectic as the music may be, I always find myself coming back, indicating that there’s something truly exciting to behold here.
