If you’ve been paying any sort of attention to the artists we all really enjoy here at Lyrical Lemonade, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when I mention RonSoCold as being one of our absolute favorite rappers to talk about. His persona is unique and individualistic, as is his music of course, and he has been absolutely blowing up over the last couple of years. This could be due to his out of the box approach to music, his undeniable knack for creating catchy hits that get stuck in listeners’ heads, or his sheer output of releases that always keep his name in the spotlight. Whether it’s one of these things or a combination of all of them, RonSoCold is only going to see his price go up for the foreseeable future, and he’s definitely an artist you’re going to want to keep an eye on because you’re going to be seeing a lot more of him whether you like it or not.
A perfect example of his creativity and individuality comes in the form of the brand-new music video for his song “OTW”, which was featured on his self-titled debut album this past May. While you’ve most likely already heard the track when listening to RonSoCold, I wanted to cover some of the basics before getting into the video. The production is comprised of somewhat calm, expressive piano keys, to begin with, before thunderous 808s and rattling percussion enter the scene and flip the instrumental on its back. As Ron begins to spit, he sort of half sings, half raps as the pitch of his voice is raised and he recites his lyrics. While it might be somewhat difficult to decipher every single word he’s saying due to the fact that he’s speaking so hastily, the melodies that come with his delivery are truly one of a kind and attention-grabbing.
Another extremely notable feature of this track is the fact that Ron switches up his flows constantly throughout, making sure he’s keeping things fresh and always showing his fans just how much dexterity he possesses as an artist. Towards the end of the track, every element of the beat except for the drums cut out, but Ron’s melodious vocals shine through and carry you to the end of the song, proving that even with minimal to almost no production whatsoever, he still shines. As far as lyrics are concerned, Ron has become known as a bit of an underground flex professional. This concept is backed up once again in this hit as he mentions all of the beautiful women he gets and nice meals he eats, while also detailing things like people hating on him and trying to copy his style.
When it comes to almost every single RonSoCold music video that is released, they’re among my favorite underground visuals because of the fact that so many imaginative and vibrant colors are typically used throughout. This visual is among the best I’ve seen from him, because he pretty much takes a normal looking neighborhood setting and flips it on its head, turning it into a scene from an alternate dimension. Blue is a reoccurring color throughout as the trees and other elements are glowing with a royal hue, and Ron is seen sporting many different blue garments including the legendary Flint Jordan 13s. As the scene unravels, the rapper is spotted counting stacks of money while dancing around with his crew and spitting his bars. Certain effects can also be observed, my favorite being the fact that during certain portions of the video, the camera shakes on the beat along with the 808s, elevating their effects beyond just the instrumental. Other animations are also included, one turning Ron into a cartoon for brief moments and another showing a bullet flying towards the camera lens. While the actual real-life setting might’ve been a bit more ordinary than the video suggests, the effects that are used truly take us to another world that Ron first created with this incredible song.
After listening to any RonSoCold record, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he’s one of the most promising and talented up and comers in the industry. His voice is melodic all on its own and his charisma is enough to make anyone’s head turn. While his songs are energetic, vibrant, and full of life, his visuals typically serve a similar purpose and match the aesthetic of his music flawlessly. His self-titled album has been in my rotation constantly ever since it dropped, and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for fans moving forward. While there’s never a shortage of new music from the North Carolina musician, he always seems to surprise and impress fans with every new offering, so I’m definitely excited for the future, to say the least. The music video for his hit song “OTW” fits the track perfectly and it’s something you’re definitely not going to want to miss out on, so make sure to check it out as soon as you get a chance.
