mondays! – [WHOKILLEDXIX] ft. [Pussy Riot]

Although hyperpop is one of my personal favorite subgenres of music and has been for quite some time now, it seems like labels and other important industry facets want to ignore its existence and not give it the shine it deserves. When Masked Gorilla created a subdivision of Warner Records, I got excited because MG was always one of my go-to sources for new, incredible music that might’ve been undiscovered by the rest of the mainstream media, so I knew they’d do things right and sign artists who deserved it, regardless of the genre or style of music that they were creating.

When they signed WHOKILLEDXIX, I was unfamiliar with the duo of Karm the Tool and Yung Skayda, but ever since I’ve been absolutely consumed by all of the unbelievable music they’ve put out into the world, and their latest song “Mondays!” is definitely no different. Beginning with a very honest, revealing guitar melody, things quickly take a turn with some overly energetic drums and percussion that bring so much energy to the table, XIX and their feature in Pussy Riot have no choice but to take things to the next level.

With a message about how much they all hate Mondays, it’s the perfect track to listen to on a gloomy Monday such as today, and even though things begin relatively tame, this doesn’t last for long before things begin to go off the rails. When Pussy Riot comes in, their words begin quickly and pretty calm, despite the glitches and edits made to their vocals, and their energy gets more and more intense before they end their part by pretty much screaming into the microphone, turning this record on its head and making it go in an entirely different direction than what was expected after listening to the beginning.

Although both members of XIX seem to continue to use a similar demeanor as they began with, vocal effects and distortion are put on their vocals to bring things to different levels and truly change up the vibe, leading this song to the promised land and making “mondays!” a record you’re definitely not going to want to miss out on for even a second.
