Grey Area – [2 Chainz]

Obviously, throughout the entire landscape of Rap music, there are a select handful of individuals who are simply legends at this point after everything they’ve accomplished in their careers. While 2 Chainz might not be revered as highly as he once was, there is no denying his contributions to the genre and the culture, and although his music might not be as sought after as it was even a few years ago after a boom of young stars rising through the ranks, that doesn’t make his songs any less impressive.

In 2020, he dropped his album So Help Me God!, a 15 song effort featuring names like Lil Wayne, Kanye, Mulatto, Chief Keef, Lil Uzi, Rick Ross, and many others, and although I still have to spend some more time listening to truly give it the time of day, there are a few cuts off the album that are undeniable hits without a doubt in my mind. The project’s second track is called “Grey Area” and also happens to be one of my early favorites from the album, so when I saw that 2 Chainz decided to drop a music video directed by Tity Tarantino and Motion Family, I had no choice but to tune in. I’m so glad I did, though, because the iconic Atlanta superstar takes us on a wild journey, unlike anything I could’ve ever expected. Opening up on 2 Chainz rolling some blunts on a tray riddled in magic mushrooms inside his home, the rapper hangs out with his dog Trappy for a low-key day that quickly becomes much more eventful.

After mixing a psychedelic cocktail in the blender, Tity Boi takes a sip and immediately begins to trip at the same time as Trappy, who happened to get into the stash of the shrooms as well. Don’t worry, though, because the bio of the visual claims that no dogs were harmed in the making of the video, so Trappy does a nice job of acting. As the room begins to get wavy, Trappy’s head emerges on 2 Chainz’s body as the emcee’s head does the same on the dog’s body, leading us to a plethora of beyond trippy scenes that eventually culminate with the rapper waking up the next day foggy eyed and open-minded.

2 Chainz might be an OG in the Rap scene, but that doesn’t stop him from enjoying the insane lifestyle that his music has been able to give him. While I was not expecting the psychedelic trip that he took us on going into this video, I was pleasantly surprised at the creativity and wild adventure that unraveled before my eyes, so I’m definitely beyond pleased with the outcome. I’ve always been a 2 Chainz fan and always will be as far as I’m concerned, especially if he continues to drop music and visuals like “Grey Area”, so make sure you don’t miss out and peep the brand-new music video whenever you get the chance.
