Get To Know: Top-Tier

As we all know by now, Lyrical Lemonade is all about rooting for the underdogs, staying on top of what’s next up, and giving that spotlight to those who deserve it. These are things that we all pay close attention to when covering new music on the site. While doing one of my searches, I happened to come across a producer that goes by the name of Top Tier. Top Tier is a California native ready to take on the industry and demolish anything in his path. What makes him stand out from the rest is the fact that he is a triple threat. Knowing how to write, produce, and engineer has allowed him to tap into as many genres as he can. There are only a select few out there that are good at all three, and Top-Tier is just blessed to be a part of that group.

During our brief conversation, I asked Top-Tier what impact is he looking to make with his music, and he responded with, “To impact anyone and everyone who can relate to my story!”. Top-Tier wants to be able to help and motivate people not only through the good times but, most importantly through the tough ones! He has some new heat on the way, and you can get to know him below!

Q: What inspired your artist name? And where did you get the name from?

A: Well, for as long as I can remember, my mom used to always tell me “In whatever you do in life son make sure you are Top Tier”; meaning the highest level or rank with regard to quality, reputation, or importance, and that always stuck with me. She said this so much that it became my everyday standard in literally everything I did. After years of contemplating on a name I randomly thought to myself one day “What defines me better than Top Tier?” Nothing. It was me in all aspects, So I ran with it. “TOP-TIER”

Q: Why music? Describe your passion.

A: Music has always been my passion for as long as I can remember. I’ve tried just about everything you can think of, but music is the one thing I just couldn’t stay away from. It’s the feeling it gives me. Nothing else has allowed me to portray my emotions in such a way.

Q: Who or what inspired your sound?

A: Well, growing up in not only LA, but also Atlanta, has a lot to do with my inspiration/sound. Not only that, but my parents are also Caribbean, so that was being played around the house all the time.  I don’t think a lot of people are fortunate enough to get the best of three worlds, but I was blessed enough to do so. Listening to people like DJ Quik, Dr. DRE, Mustard, etc., stamped that LA sound on me. Bob Marley, Beanie Man, etc. stamped that Caribbean sound on me. When I moved to Atlanta, I would listen to Gucci, T.I. Future and literally all the ATL producers and that showed me a whole different side of music that I never knew. I’d study all of them & I’d like to think I’m now the perfect hybrid between all three.

Q: Who is your motivation and why?

A: I like to say my whole family. Every single one of them has played a huge part in my life and it’s a blessing. I’m just trying to do my part. I can’t wait to return all the love they have shown me. This is what I do it for.

Q: How would you describe your sound/style?

A: I’m still trying to figure out how to define my sound as we speak. My sound literally changes day by day in my opinion. It’s all about feeling with me, so depending on how I feel when I wake up in the morning that will determine my sound for that day. I REALLY like up-tempo music though, so I tend to make a lot of that. As far as my style, if we’re talking about clothing, I’d have to say the same thing. I’m pulling off all looks; just depends on the day.

Q: Do you also write, produce, andengineer your own music?

A: Yes! Learning these three skills has been the best thing I’ve ever decided to do. I encourage all artists to do the same thing. Not only has it helped me get into rooms but it has specifically allowed me to not have to wait on no one. Changed my life. I do love to collaborate though, let me make that clear. It’s one of my favorite things to do honestly. Everyone should collaborate. Music is a team sport.
