Favorite Ni**a – [REASON]

If you’re even remotely familiar with Rap music, you already know that TDE contains some of the most talented artists in the industry. Even if we’re not talking about the Kendricks, Schoolboy Qs, Ab-Souls, or Jay Rocks, their roster goes so much deeper than their world-renown talents, and REASON is one of the most underrated yet incredibly talented acts they have on their lineup. After his debut project New Beginnings dropped, this is abundantly clear, and although it featured some heavy hitters like Schoolboy, Soulo, Rapsody, Isaiah Rashad, and JID, REASON made sure that he wasn’t left in the dust for even a single offering.

The project reached the #167 spot on this week’s Billboard Top 200 list and even though it might not be more towards the top where it should be, breaking onto this coveted list, in general, is an unbelievable feat in and of itself. In order to keep his momentum going, he decided to drop off a brand-new music video for one of the project’s most notable songs “Favorite Ni**a”, a track that I’m not going to go into detail about because you’ve most likely already heard it and if not, you’ll realize what you’ve been missing out on while watching this miniature movie.

One thing that constantly keeps me coming back to the various videos REASON releases is the dark, ominous, and gritty aesthetics that each of his visuals seems to possess, with this one being absolutely no different. It opens up on what looks like a body that’s wearing white clothes, although the garments are covered in deep red bloodstains. As REASON looks into the mirror inside a run-down room, he is peeling some sort of fake layer off of his skin, something I can only imagine is a disguise he used during whatever crime he just committed.

It turns out he’s inside of a room at a sketchy-looking motel and the workers have no idea what’s unfolding inside of his room as he washes the blood off of his hands, letting it slowly leak down into the sink’s drain. When he finally hops in his car, he makes his way through some city streets where all of the lights are accentuated as he continues to touch his face and act on edge, signifying the fact that somethings going on and if he gets caught, he’ll be in massive trouble. He pays attention to all the people he passes by in the streets as he eyes groups of friends, motorcyclists, and a bearded man hopping on his chopper as he pulls into a gas station to refill his tank.

He seems to continuously have flashbacks to the crime as the camera shows him chasing after a gentleman in his car before blood splatters on the ground. He slowly but surely makes his way out of the city into the countryside as dollar bills float off out of his trunk, leaving a literal paper trail to the culminating scene. Here, the sun begins to rise early in the morning as he drags the lifeless body out of his trunk and buries it in a place that is far off the beaten path before hopping back in his car and going about his life as if nothing happened.

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what this visual has to do with the song itself, but the ruthless, violent actions that seemed to take place in the video definitely complement the aggressive, on-edge style that is more than clear within the song. REASON is so obviously talented in more ways than one and seeing him keep up with the consistent aesthetic and precedent he has set for himself is as noteworthy as his music itself. Considering New Beginnings is TDE’s first full-length project of 2020 so far, REASON was given the challenge of carrying the label for the time being, and I don’t think he could’ve done a better job if he tried. If you’re late to his project, I highly recommend you check it out, and the music video for “Favorite Ni**a” is a flawless example as to why I have such praise.
