If I’m being completely candid about my musical preferences, it really doesn’t take a lot to grab my attention from the start. All I need is an interesting or unique beat, an artist that brings something at least slightly different to the table, and a personality that isn’t the same as everyone else. If you have this, I’ll definitely tune in, but I think the much more difficult thing to do is keep me intrigued and coming back for more. Not that I am the end-all, be-all voice of reason in music, but I just find myself getting excited about certain artists who I then grow tired of because I just can’t stay as interested as I was at first.

Well, I think the perfect example of a duo who caught me off guard in a fantastic way early on and has managed to keep my attention for months and maybe even a year or two at this point is WHOKILLEDXIX. When I first tapped in with them, I was really into hyperpop, a genre I still love but just don’t strictly listen to daily like I once did, and while they certainly have some of the makings of this subgenre, they somehow manage to incorporate even more styles into their ridiculously diverse and complex discography.

Karm the Tool and Yung Skayda just know how to keep things entertaining, and that’s clear on their latest self-produced single “ATTENTION!” just as much as it is on any other song that they release. Instead of their occasional electronic-forward, frenzied style that they’ve shown off extensively on other records in the past, this track is strictly punk rock, invigorated by the intense drums, speaker-shaking electric guitars, and unapologetic deliveries that are used by both emcees. At the same time, though, there are still moments of intentional hesitation or glitches, bringing the hyperpop qualities into this entirely different sonic world that they’ve created.

Even the Diego G-directed video brings the heat as you’re taken to one of their live performances where circular mosh pits break out and you have to realize that if you’re not ready to tear the house down like everyone else around you, you’re going to be left in the dust wishing you were better prepared. “ATTENTION!” might sound familiar considering just a snippet of the song has gone viral on TikTok with over 175,000 views, so whether you have experienced it on the social media platform or not, make sure you take some time to rage out to the full version below.
