Ever since catching my attention at our last Lyrical Lemonade cypher, Kiraly Payne has been playing in my headphones frequently. I recently chopped it up with him and we spoke on plenty of subjects, so be sure to read up on him below then check out his music here.
EM: Before we start, give our readers that may not be familiar with you a brief introduction of yourself.
KP: What’s good, I go by the name of Kiraly Payne. I’m a 20 year old rapper/producer/engineer. I live in the suburbs and I’m originally from Oak Park Illinois. I started making beats in 7th grade as well recording my own music in 7th grade as well and never stopped. Till this day, I still mix all of my music. I’m part of a collective called Royal Music as well as a production collective called NWB.
EM: When were NWB & Royal Music created?
KP: I started Royal Music when I was 15. So around 2012 I believe. Me and my guys have been making beats together for a while now but we established NWB this year. The production team consists of myself, JUSTWill, ILLA, King Jorey & Nobility. All of my production is done in house, either by me or someone in my squad; aside from one song on my Soundcloud which is produced by Ongaud.
EM: What rappers are your top five influences?
KP: Kendrick Lamar is my favorite rapper of all time and to be honest it’s not even close. My other influences are Lil Wayne, TI, Eminem and Drake. Growing up TI was the reason I began making music. I’m into a lot of new school shit as well though, a lot. J Cole is also a major influence, had to throw that in there lol
EM: Man people be forgetting that TI was really that dude for a few years in the 2000’s. Between the King album & the movie ATL, not even to mention the hits. What are your top five favorite albums of all time? As well as your top 5 favorite mixtapes of all time?
KP: Exactly man. Urban Legend and King were the shit. They were really the reasons I started rapping. But if I had to say top 5 I’d say Kendrick’s Section .80, Drake’s Take Care and NWTS(count that as one lol), Long Live ASAP was amazing to me, Kendricks TPAB, Carter III and I know it’s a sixth but I have to throw TI’s Urban Legend in there too. Man I have a lot of favorite mixtapes. My favorites that come to mind have to be Overly Dedicated by Kendrick, Gone Fishing by the Cool Kids, Lost Cause by Tory Lanez(this is slept on), Friday Night Lights and Acid Rap. In no particular order.
EM: How would you describe your music to someone who has never listened before?
KP: Just know that anything that you hear Kiraly Payne is rapping on, you’re going to get BARS. Alotta niggas not really rapping anymore, and that’s not me. I have something to prove and people to prove wrong and that’s the mindset that I have when I write every single verse. Also, I speak my life. I speak nothing but truth.
EM: What was the first piece of music you ever purchased?
KP: Well to be honest with you my parents were like extreme hip hop heads so I never really had to buy albums, they always bought em themselves you feel me. I didn’t actually go out and buy an album myself until Carter III.
EM: How much has the city of Chicago influenced you?
KP: The city has influenced me a lot man, but it’s certain artists that have inspired me a lot more than others. Some artists in the city who have given me inspiration are Mick Jenkins, Saba, Alex Wiley’s older music, and of course Chance. What’s crazy is I actually met Chance a few times before he got on and had a conversation with him. It’s just inspiring because just a few years ago he wasn’t that far ahead of me. It’s amazing to see how far he came
EM: What is your favorite song of yours that you have created?
KP: That’s an extremely tough question.. To be honest it always changes. I think my new shit that’s on my upcoming Z EP probably has my favorite tracks.. But out of what I have out right now, it would have to be The Unexpected, Ridin Through My City or Road To Royalty.
EM: What is one wild fact about you that people don’t know?
KP: All of my music is recorded on the same $70 microphone that I bought when I was a freshman in high school.. Quality is all in the mixing man
EM: Who are some of the smaller Chicago artists that you want to collab with?
KP: Well Marcus that’s my homie we actually went to high school together. I respect his grind a lot. I rock with Eyezik too, who recently changed his name to like Pollux Grim I believe lol. Also my cousin TeBe whose currently making his own noise. Other than that it’s not a whole lot of smaller Chicago artists that I legitimately listen to like that. Oh yea, gotta say I really rock with Ausar Bradley too. Dude is one of the best rappers I know. Also, my boy Nobility whose on my production team
EM: The National Anthem or the International Players Anthem?
KP: Lmao just on some rap shit I gotta go with international players anthem
EM: What are your thoughts on Donald Trump?
KP: The man is an idiot. I don’t even have to explain why, he’s just an ignorant idiot. Definitely voting for Hillary lol
EM: If you could collab with one person dead or alive who would it be?
KP: You probably saw this coming, but definitely Kendrick haha
EM: What are your top three favorite kendrick songs?
EM: Last question, where do you see yourself in five years?
KP: In 5 years I see my dreams coming to reality, and being one of the most influential artists of our generation. That’s all I can see
