There was an insane amount of new music in January, so what better way to ring-in 2018 then a Staff Picks list? Find out who cracked the list below and check back next month for the Top Songs of February!
ALSO, big shoutout to the writing team for all of the help. Appreciate you guys!
Lil Skies – Big Money
One of the obvious highlights from last month was Lil Skies much-anticipated release of his Life Of A Dark Rose project. From the energy in the intro-track Welcome To The Rodeo to our undisputed staff-pick in Big Money, there was really no better way for Skies to kick off 2018. You’d best not let this one slip under the radar.
YBN Nahmir – Bounce Out With That
YBN Nahmir made quite the impression in January with a fiery release in Bounce Out With That, which was also accompanied by a stunning visual courtesy of Cole Bennett. The bouncy production from Hoodzone was right at home for YBN’s unforgettable bars that first grabbed everyone’s attention in his breakthrough track Rubbin In The Paint from last year. Do yourself a favor and check out this amazing song & visual below.
6Dogs – Buttcheeks
6Dogs first major label drop in Buttcheeks was without-a-doubt one of the most dynamic releases of last month. Reigning from Atlanta’s suburbs, the 18-year-olds drippy, alternative style stands out amongst the rest of the list due to his unique delivery over wavy instrumentals from producers like Benny Blanco & Cashmere Cat who provided the soothing beat. You can expect 6Dogs to make a gigantic splash this year, so be sure to get familiar immediately and check out the Cole Bennett-directed visual for the song as well.
Cam O’bi Ft. Smino – Tenderheaded
Las Vegas-based artist Cam O’bi entered 2018 with a bang as he came through with a brand new offering in Tenderheaded featuring Smino. The first single from his forthcoming Grown Ass Kid project was self-produced and saw the duo trade-off with their charismatic lyricism over the jazzy production that, in my opinion, was impressive enough to start off with. You can expect to see these two join forces more often in the future, but let this one hold you down until then.
Mac Miller, Carnage, Madeintyo – Learn How To Watch
Legendary producer/ DJ Carnage shook the internet earlier this month when he unleashed an incredible song & video for his Mac Miller and Madeintyo-assisted banger Learn How To Watch. If you would have told me that we’d be seeing Mac Miller & Madeintyo on a DJ Carnage-produced record this year, I simply wouldn’t have believed you at first. But, that was the case just a few weeks ago as Mac and Tyo went ballistic over the bass-filled track that we’ve become accustomed to in Carnage’s music for quite some time. To put things in simpler terms, do not sleep on this one.
JBan$2Turnt Ft. Yung Bans – Mood Swings
JBan$2Turnt is a familiar face on our platform, and to open things up this year he linked with fellow Atlanta native Yung Bans on their melodic record Mood Swings. With production from Goose, both Bans & his counterpart came through with mesmerizing autotune lyricism that has undoubtedly become a staple in both of their past releases. From trust-issues with women to lames forever changing their mood, this was just another reason why these guys will make some serious noise this year, not to mention their inclusion in the discussion for potential XXL Freshman class spots.
Yung Pinch – Sail Away
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Yung Pinch makes this list with his first release of 2018. In his latest offering Sail Away, the Huntington Beach product was in his bag as usual with catchy vocals on women, relationships and everything in between. This man certainly doesn’t need an introduction, and look out for him to be featured on our platform countless times throughout this year.
Amir Tripp – Hardball
Chicago’s own Amir Tripp startled this month with his latest record Hardball, which just so happened to hit his SoundCloud page only a few days ago. Featuring trumpet-laced production from Zay Rock & himself, the ear-catching record was one-of-two releases from Tripp this past month, with the latter being the Saba & Trapo-assisted track Slide On Ya that easily could have found its way onto this list as well. Be sure to keep tabs on this man in 2018 and check-back for more from Amir Tripp on our website very, very soon.
Thanks for checking out this month’s list! Stay tuned for February’s Top Songs list coming soon.
