This month, Chicago band YourFrends dropped their debut EP, “Just Mondays.” Grounded in hip-hop with inflections of soul and jazz, this group comprised of three young Chicago artists has crafted a unique style that at its core sounds as diverse as the city itself. Members Thee Unique, Franchika and Tyler all have their own skills up their sleeves and their individual strengths complement each other, making for a cohesive and concentrated project.
The opening track “Chicago Kid” acts as a door into the group’s world. They string together stark lyricism about the reality of the city in contrast to the media’s portrayal, rapping, “who wants to be a hashtag when they grow up? I love my city; how come they can’t see that we’ve had enough?” While they’re not afraid to push harsh realities face-to-face with a listener, YourFrends also maintain optimism as a common thread throughout this entire project. Altogether, “Just Mondays” asserts YourFrends’ presence, giving listeners a promising introduction to a group of Chicago kids with fresh sounds, distinct perspectives and undeniable talents.
